After hearing all the horror stories we left our belongings in the van. Bought some bananas and carrots at foot of hill. Once our transport parked up we only walked a few yards and the monkeys approached. They only wanted the carrots and ignored the bananas. They were quite polite and waited. Only one - looked like the alpha - that approached us when he saw the carrots and grabbed our clothes until we handed it over. Strange but didn’t want any bananas - no interest in those.
Because of the heat (and other places to visit) we didn’t go all the way up because we saw enough monkeys (small and big) within 100 yds.
Good experience for kids without going all the way up.

Fantastic experience. My 6 year old loved seeing the monekys! I would highly recommend visiting!
Although, It is very important to take notice of the guidelines when visiting Moneky Hill. I noticed a lot of tourists not following the recommended guidelines, which resulted in monkeys becoming aggressive.

Monkeys are dangerous. I avoided eye contact and it still attacked me. I managed to escape but I almost got bitten...

A lot of monkeys, starting at the bottom and up the roads there’s hundreds. Will steal everything you’re carrying so put your things in a bag and don’t open it, as soon as they even hear the zipper being opened they’ll be onto you.
Had a coconut stolen from table, plastic bag with water bottle and crisps in, and stolen bananas out of a closed bag.
Fun to feed but make sure you carry a stick with you to scare them off incase they jump on you, which happens a lot

We walked up Monkey Hill. Tons of monkeys - very cute. Mamas with babies, little ones, big ones, most either looking for food or ignoring you. We brought our walking sticks because of the steep incline of the road. We took the road - apparently there is a trail that you can take, but we didn't do that.
Good: its a great workout (it is STEEP and about a mile up, there is decent tree shade, but it can make for some slippery spots), the monkeys are cute. We enjoyed the walk, and the one view point was nice.
So-so: the viewpoints are mostly covered because the trees have gotten quite tall and thick (this is good, that they aren't chopping down tree growth just to humour the need of humans to see the view, but it still means minimal view).
Not good: there are feral animals who have habituated to feeding from people. And not all people are nice. So, they can be aggressive (especially males, and females with babies if you get too close). And while it appears that there is some effort to give rabies vaccines, etc, the fact is that there are just too many to treat.
My advice: go, but don't touch. Walk around them. Our walking sticks were great - we didn't wave them at them or anything, but they seemed very uninclined to approach us with our walking sticks tapping on the ground. Don't grab some big club piece of wood off the side of the road - they are faster than you can swing that, that's just dumb. Don't wear shiny things (I took my earrings off, we put our water bottle in our backpack. Don't tease them - one idiot ahead of us was walking towards them with his club stick sort of poking out at them. He didn't hit any, but it clearly got them a bit riled. Idiot. I'm not sure I would bring small children.
As a side note, there is a cafe at the entry/parking point, and we had pretty decent spring rolls, Pad Thai, and Ginger chicken, at a table with a view. And nice cold drinks to refresh after that hike!

DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE! We drove to Monkey Hill and parked at the top. As soon as we got out of the car, my son (6 years old) casually walked on the road and was not holding any food. He was calm and a monkey just walked up to him and maliciously bit him on the arm. We had to take him to get a rabies jab (5 vaccination spread out over a month) and he is now petrified of monkeys.
Do not step out of your car at all...the monkeys are ferocious. Not a good experience at all and we've made a complaint to the Phuket tourism board.

After visiting ourselves as a couple, my wife and I were shocked to read many reviews on here warning people away due to "violent" and "aggressive" monkeys. The lack of understanding these people show of the terms "wild" and "monkey" is quite frankly astonishing.
The monkeys (in this case short tailed macaques) are very intelligent opportunists who have learnt over many years they can rely on tourists for easy meals/water. They also exist within a hierarchy, usually defined by size. Due to this, the monkeys will of course try and grab any food or drink you take on the hill. Again, why this would be a surprise to anyone beyond the mental age of 7 is baffling to me.
Therefore, if this is something that would upset you or is something you can't handle, I would strongly advise not visiting. We saw a tourist try and feed a monkey treats from a plastic bag individually, this of course resulted in a large macaque aggressively taking the entire bag and dishing out the contents to the younger members of the group as he saw fit, much to the tourist's surprise. Another tourist tried to feed a monkey water from a water bottle. The monkey promptly snatched this immediately and they began scrapping over the contents.
If you are a functioning adult who understands wildlife, this is a magical experience. I advise not taking anything at all the monkeys can steal (edible or not) and moving with confidence through the group. Eye contact is also seen as a challenge in the monkey world so would avoid this where possible. They are amazing animals who have truly made this place their own, and it is wonderful to see the locals move amongst them in harmony (it seems to be a popular running spot).

After reading the terrifying reviews about monkey hill we went anyway in our car. there are four of us adults in the car and we proceeded very carefully up the hill where we saw many monkeys along the road. We never rolled out our windows and we took pictures through the glass. At one point a monkey jumped up on the passenger rear side into the window and scared me to death! We kept going down the hill until we saw a 25-year-old woman screaming and running from a group of marauding monkeys. She was clearly terrified and so we pulled over cracked the window and instructed her to jump in our car. She was able to do so but was very upset! We drove her to safety and her boyfriend came down with his Moto and took her away. I was shaken up for the rest of the day. I would advise anyone who’s interested in seeing monkeys to stay away from this place.

The monkeys are extremely hostile and aggressive. If you don’t have a MAN with you DO NOT GO. I have been to Monkey Hill 2 times, first time with my father and then my brother. At one point of the trip I got a little ahead of my brother, he stayed back about 20 m from me admiring the monkeys playing. At that point one monkey came right up to me and started pulling on my bag. It was a young male monkey and I screamed and kicked to scare him off, it did not work, right up until my brother started running up to me, the monkey just didn’t let go and scratched my leg up pretty bad. These monkeys are ruthless and see women and children as prey. If you try to feed the monkeys, they will literally attack you and hiss at you to get the food. They will try to scare you or intimidate you (more the young male monkeys) stand your ground, don’t look them in the eyes and if needed, scream and run like hell, because they will bite and scratch.
Not worth the trip.

We paid 1100 baht roundtrip from our Hilton hotel and back - we didn’t haggle so not sure if that’s a particularly good price. The car ride was 45 minutes each way and we stayed over an hour, so we we still thought it was fair.

How much would it cost to get a tuk tuk or a taxi to Monkey Hill from Phuket Town? Will they wait for us while we visit, or how likely is it we'll be able to find a ride back?

We are currently at the Dusit Thani Laguna hotel Phuket and wondering the best way to get to Monkey Hill? As our hotel has quoted 800 baht each way!

I think cheapest way would be is to bargain w/the taxi driver outside of the hotel as oppose to going thru the hotel.

They're wild monkeys. Of course they're not vaccinated. I wouldn't take such a young child. As I mentioned in my review they can become quite nasty. Definitely not a place for a toddler.
does anyone know where monkey hill is,and when the best time is to visit?

We went mid afternoon and it was HOT but monkeys were out. I would try for morning or early evening and we took a taxi and the driver knew exactly where to go.

Monkey Hill is in Phuket. If you mean how far from Phuket Town, it is less than 10 minutes by car, maybe a couple of kilometers away. I’m not sure of the price as I don’t recall, but I can tell you that the hill closes to vehicles and scooters at 4 pm. So make sure you have your ride come before then, otherwise you’ll have to walk down the hill to the main gate to meet up with your transportation.
Yes, the monkeys are long tailed macaques. So cute! Consider reading my review for some safety tips to ensure you have the best experience possible! Really worth the visit.
My opinion is that between noon and 3 is a good time to go. At dusk and dark the monkeys will put themselves to bed/retreat back into the forest.
Have fun and enjoy!
