Fourth largest Roman city

Worth a detour from Split. Huge area and only part excavated. Fascinating groups of churches and sarcophagi as well as amphitheatre.

We took the no.1 bus from Split which stopped right outside the site. All the people on the bus made sure we got off at the right stop! Once inside we were amazed at the quality of the ruins. It was very peaceful and we were free to walk around and through everything. A short ten minute walk took us... More

A whole lot of reviews of the town of Solin are actually reviews of the archeological site of Salona, which is located in modern Solin. Solin is a sleepy, quiet suburb of Split, with mostly residential houses and not much to do or see other than the ruins of ancient Salona.

We liked the city of Solin quite lot. It is a small city by river surrounded with amazing nature and clean air. We liked the most the fact that it is only 7 minutes from Split but still quite and very comfort area.

We saw three parts to this site. On the uphill side near the parking lot is the ruins of an early Christian church - interesting to walk through and see all the old sarcophagi (I wonder where all the bodies went). A short walk downhill from there are the ruins of a large Roman town - no particular focal point... More

City of Solin is very close to the city of Split, with taxi it took about 5 minutes. We really like it because it is very clean and great for morning jogging.

We liked combination of old Roman ruins and nature. It was not very far from our hotel, 2-3 minutes by taxi.

Solin is the town where the Salona roman ruins are located. We spent 2 and half hours at the ruins and saw all of it except for some sections of the wall (we figured the sections we saw were representative) and the Necropolis of Marusinac (this is separate from the others and we simply missed it). If you are short... More
