This three domed church is gorgeous on the outside and rather simple on the inside. Except for the magnificent altar piece. It is beautiful in its lack of ostentatious gold. It invites and comforts.

It was started in 1801 but completed in 1895 due to the British invasions. Main altar was made by Antonio Veiga, having won two prizes in a continental exposition in Buenos Aires in 1882. In the altar you can find an image of "Virgen del Carmen" from the "Ciudad de Santander" a vapor ship that sunk near Isla de Lobos in 1829. As the owner of the ship, Marqués de Comillas survived the incident, he gave the image as a gift to the church.…

This is a must see along with the Cathedral in Montivideo. The architectural challenge and statues are great works of art.

This is just a short drive (took us maybe 10 minutes) from Punta del Este. The church is in a wonderful area of town with a pedestrian walking street full of shops. The square outside of the church was bustling will people and families when we stopped by to see. We were able to find a parking spot on the square but it is really busy down here (so you may have to look around on the side streets.) The church was beautiful and well maintained. We went in during a time when it was really quite but there was a mass being held in a back wing of the church, so we only saw the main sanctuary. This is all we went to see during this afternoon but were happy we took the time to do it.…
