Castiglione was liberated by the South Africans and the Americans.
This cemetery collects the remains of the first.
The place is very sad and very beautiful, well maintained, with a spectacular view of the valley.
An opportunity to thank those who, despite coming from so far away, freed us, even at the cost of their lives.

When travelling in this area with South African school groups, we always bring them to this cemetery, after hiking with them into the hills of Monte Sole. It is in the hills of Monte Sole where the saddest of events took place towards the end of WWII - the massacre of civilians.
Here in this cemetery more than 500 South African soldiers are buried. Young men who sacrificed their lives so that we may enjoy a better life free from totalitarianism.
I am always very touched by a visit to this site, because it is here where an uncle of mine - a youngster of 17 years old - were buried a few weeks before peace was declared.
I have no idea what type of person he was, how he managed to get into this war at the tender age of 15 or what his personal contribution was to this futile exercise called WAR. All I know is that he was the same tender age as many of these precious teenagers I bring here to be reminded of South Africa's history and place in the World.
When I look into the faces of our boys, I am so thankful ... and at the same time so sad for so many lives lost like the life of my Uncle Will, the uncle I never met.

There were 401 graves of South African from the 2nd world war. The youngest was only 15 years old. There is a register of all the names. The words were in Afrikaans and English. It is on a hill and overlooks the small town of Castiglione. The Commonwealth is maintaining this place. It is worth a visit.

A typical Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, exceptionally well maintained, and the staff member was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

This military cemetery is located on a hill near Castiglione dei Pepoli. It is a fitting tribute of commemoration and remembrance of the South African soldiers who lost their lives here in the war for our freedom. An evocative place for meditation, prayer and meditation. Very well cared for, to the point that at first glance it seems more like a garden than a cemetery, even if the long rows of white crosses bring us back to solemn reality. Free and free entry from the gate. In my opinion, when passing by it is necessary to stop briefly and leave your signature in the register kept in the shrine of the temple.

I found out everything I wanted to know myself, but I have a question to the staff and that is that I was in Baragazza for one week and I really wanted to see the museum in Castiglione dei Pepoli and it was always closed. I do not know why they have a museum at all. So people do not even try and visit this museum as the museum staff does not work. I was very disappointed.

What is the best way to get there from Bologna, Also what is the weather like in May.
Written 4 March 2019
There is a highway from Bologna to Florence and in between you will find a offramp to Baragazza and from Baragazza it is about 5km to Castiglione. I do not know what the weather is like in May as I was there in August.

Were could I get flowers to put on a grave.
Written 4 March 2019
Well if you are near Baragazza or at Castiglione I suppose the town will somewhere have flowers to buy. I did not try to get flowers for a grave, but I suppose every town will have a shop where you could buy flowers.

You can either fly to Bologna or Florence. The place is between these two cities.
