Nice quick visit
Jul 2021
Nice, well maintained fort which looked equally beautiful during day and night times. We just visited this fort when we walked through town and passed it but it was a very nice experience.

Interesting historic fort with a great exhibit on the city and region
Jun 2021 • Couples
Thoroughly enjoyed the museum exhibit in the center of the fort which described the history of Bacalar and the region within the greater Mayan, Spanish, and Mexican worlds. The views are nice and it's great that the cannons are still on the walls. Outside of all the lake activities here, it's good to learn about the history as well.

Not much to it
Sep 2020
While it is the only historic building in the town of Bacalar, the fort is not overly impressive and you'll likely tour the whole thing in under one hour. There are some nice views from the ramparts but not much else to do.

Wonderful experience

It was great visiting the inside of the fort. We had taken pictures of the outside but decided to pay the entrance fee. There is a small museum inside which provides the history of the area and why the fort was built. Wonderful views

Keep out the Pirates!!
Sep 2020
We were very surprised to find out the the city on the lake had an old fort. Even though it's over 15 miles from the ocean pirates sailed into the lake and plundered the town of Bacalar, so they built the fort complete with several canons for protection. It wasn't open and there wasn't a whole lot to see, it was still worth the quick to walk around. The view of the fort from the lake was even better.

The Fuerte makes for a nice walk on the bastions but nothing more.
Also, extremely pricy for tourists and very cheap for locals... Passed the gates there are almost no people, maybe due to the price...

Nice old fort in the city center
Jan 2020
The San Felipe fort stands in the very center of Bacalar town, right by the main central Plaza. It was built in 18c as a Mexican stronghold against invading English colonizers, as well the pirates.
Today it's a museum dedicated to them, but we had no time to enter it as we were returning to our ship. We were satisfied seeing its exterior with old pirate cannons, and our driver showed us descriptions of the Yucatan history from its prehistorical population to modern times.

Is great visit places like this that explains the place’s history and all the details, maps, antiques are very historical. I just think the entry price is expensive for the small area and fast round.

Not a lot to see here. Rusted out gun carraiges and some cannons. Fort itself is not compelling in any fashion. One room contained a totally unrelated artist's exhibit.
