I must confess this fortification and its Church exceeded all my expectations. This early 10th century castle is well preserved and clearly very well taken care of. The Alcacova church within its premises is an absolute gem. I was surprised not to see anyone supervising its visit. I should further add that the view over the firmer rice paddies"area is astonishingly beautiful.

This a great stop along the road from Coimbra to Porto. This attraction is free and the ruins and grounds are quite lovely. We spent about an hour walking the grounds, climbing the fortress walls and viewing the surrounding countryside. There is also a church on the premises. It's a nice place to stretch your legs. BTW, the tea room no longer exists...it is now the visitor center.

We found this great place on a very hot day, but became entranced by a wedding that was taking place on the grounds and we became involved as spectators in the intact chapel. It's fun to wander the ruins and imagine the hands that built those ancient walls and the people who lived and worked there. There's a little tea shop where you can take refuge from sun and rain. Recommended time there: 1 hour unless there is a wedding.

Don't be intimidated by what seems to be a long hike up hundreds of stairs to get to the castle--there's an escalator.

We visited this beautiful medieval castle from our hotel The Graça Real near Coimbra. There was free admission to this very large castle ruins. Access was so easy as they had three large escalators to reach the castle built on the steep mountain. The site dates from at least 1090 when the church was built. It may have been settled as early as the Roman times. It was rebuilt several times over the centuries. We spent hours wandering around exploring and reading the history. There was a somewhat steep but easy descent from the castle to the town passing very old quaint homes on the way.

If you travel between Coïmbra and Figueira da Foz, it is worth stopping in Montemor-o-Velho to visit this fortress and its church within the castle grounds. Beautiful views from the top of the hill.

It's really worth a visit, and it's free!
The walls are well preserved, there's a chapel and gardens. From the walls you can see the rice fields and great views from the surrounding area.
The gardens and trees are beautiful and you can clearly see that it's being taken care of.
Don't miss it!

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful castles in Portugal. Great views over the rice fields and lots of history to go with it. The church inside the castle is also worth a visit - the altar by Jean de Rouen is quite interesting.

We arrived late and only had a few minutes to visit. Loved the views. The grounds were a nice park. Very quiet and peaceful place.

If you chose to stay long in Coimbra and got bored (you'd be anyway, the city ONLY has the university and that's it!), and if you are mobile, one good idea is to head for the beach in Figueira da Foz for a change, to see why the Portuguese compare it to Copacabana - you'll just laugh as you get there, no comparison possible!!
Anyway, on the way, make sure to make a stop at this medieval moorish castle majestically sitting on a hill overlooking rice and maize fields!
You can even wed there if you like it but the most amazing is that the entrance is free of charge - I'd gladly pay!!
