GARGAS 27 000 years ago, Homo Sapiens's families frequented the caves of Gargas. These men, women and children left numerous tracks on walls: engravings and paintings of animals, but also and especially more than 200 paintings of hands the scientists of which still look for the meaning. Gargas is one of rare decorated caves open to the public and thus number limited by people during the visits (compulsory Reservation) NESTPLORIA is a center of interpretation which gathers in a playful way the prehistory and the new technologies. He allows to uncover the secrets of Gargas via digital tools. THE EXPLORERS OF THE PREHISTORY is a permanent exhibition to learn about the jobs by the archaeology: tub of searches, reproduction of a prehistoric camp, etc. THE TRIBE OF the BUFFALO is the new cooperative and family video game created quite specially for Gargas-Nestploria. Up to 8 players can embody the members of the tribe of the bison. Together, they have to explore numerous territories and associate their skills to survive and reach their purpose: find a refuge for winter and become a real tribe.

Nestploria is the interpretive centre for the Grottes de Gargas, located a short distance away from the caves. It seemed as if the attraction designers wanted to replicate the claustrophobia of the caves here. They would have done better to leave that sensation for the...More

We chose to visit the caves when the temperature outside was unbearably hot so the 11 degrees in the cave was welcomed (we luckily brought a jumper to wear). Unfortunately they didn't provide us with an English translation of the guide at the ticket counter...More

A really atmospheric and truly spectacular cave system. The tour was all in French, but we had an English hand-out and managed to follow most of the important points. The limestone formations were amazing and beautifully lit, and the ancient hand prints and paintings were...More

These two caves (joined now, but not in antiquity) contain mysterious prehistoric paintings. The tour begins with the upper cave, where animals and markings are only faintly visible. Going further into the hillside, further underground and further back in time, your guide takes you to...More

We found it most fascinating to be able to visit these caves and to see the prehistoric cave drawings and especially the hand prints. Unfortunately, I feel that we missed out on a lot, as there was no English speaking guide available for our visit...More

If you are interested in prehistoric man/woman combined with art, then this is the palace to visit. I studied archaeology at university so have a leaning, interest wise, to this sort of thing. However, I have been back to this particular cave now three times....More

The Grottes de Gargas offer perhaps the best experience in France (after Niaux) to see cave art. Unlike Niaux the visit is physically pretty easy, with steps and walkways. One has to walk up a steepish path to enter the higher of two linked caves,...More
