No one knows exactly when this rock temple began. The truth is this place definitely predates the Kandyan Kingdom by centuries. A unique temple by any measure with many an era all entwined in to one. Not a place for the busy traveler who may need to take in all in a hour..Hindagala needs you time to let it get soak in to soul...

Hindagala Viharaya or temple is quite spectacularly located just underneath a large boulder close to the University Campus at Peradeniya. The temple seems to be located in a cave underneath the boulder and thereafter a tiled roof was built over it. It is believed that this temple is from the 6th century as ‘understood’ from the almost fully weathered away rock inscriptions just outside the temple.
The paintings along the wall are beautiful, and it is understood that they are from the 12th – 13th century. Some of the paintings have British era add-on touches as well. But they are really in bad shape…so faded that some are barely decipherable. The temple is badly in need of attention and repair. There are rarely any tourists around; the tiled roof is broken is some place & the paintings on the wall & ceiling get wet & damaged beyond repair.

The monk and an assistant opened the temple door for us…it is very nice inside with a large reclining Buddha and beautiful 'Jataka Tales' paintings on the wall and ceiling, most of which were re-done. Maybe only art lovers should venture into this temple which is not advertised as a tourist must-see

One of the oldest temples in srilanka running back to valagamba age. Still it has the ancient taste and is in a very calm hill. Most times the temple is almost quiet.
The carvings and traditionals paintings can be obsereved.

This is an ancient temple located few miles away from the Peradeniya town. Non touristic location but if you have enough time to spend in kandy this is an ideal place to visit.

This is located very close to Peradeniya University and the royal botanical gardens. This is a historical temple as many other temples in the country and today this temple is converted to a bogus patient treatment center by a Monk. They cheat poor people and treat them saying that they consult dead soles for medications. This is totally against the great Buddhism (that I have studied). I do not recommend any one to get into this corrupted place which is killing the image of the country and the historical nature of the temple too.
