We ended a 50k.walk by crossing the Tavronitis Bridge. Many troups crossed this bridge during the invasion of Crete as is evidenced by bullet holes in the metal work.of the bridge

This bridge has been witness of fighting on the first day of operation Mercury. The German Fallschirmjagers landed near the bridge with gliders. From the river, the Germans attacked the airfield of Maleme. A day later the Germans captured the airfield of Maleme. Today, there are still 'scars' from the battle

Was excited to view this but was sad to see the torpedos had gone
Maybes it might be an idea to put up a plaque explaining the history behind the bridge

If you're visiting the nearby German war graves, this is worth looking at, but it doesn't warrant going out of your way to visit.
There's an information board above the old bunker and the bridge still shows signs of the heavy fighting that took place there.

A historic bridge playing an important part of the German invasion in WW 2. Closeby there is also a memorial dedicated to the RAF.
