About
Gavalas family winery, one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, lies in the traditional village of Megalochori. The purpose of our family is to highlight the particular characteristics of Santorini’s “terroir”. The fourth generation winemaker is George Gavalas and the fifth is his son, Vagelis. With proper respect to the local varieties, we are focused on limited production bottlings. Gavalas winery vinifies the most vibrant variety in Greece, Assyrtiko, as well as Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. In order to show the richness of the land, we are the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the indigenous rare varieties of Katsano and Voudomato.

Best Wine Tasting - Must Do in Santorini!
A beautiful winery with the most distinct and spectacular wines! Our host, Kristina, walked us through the rare wines tasting and pairings, taking the extra time to answer our questions, walking us through the vineyard’s history, and making us feel at home. This is a must stop place if you are in Santorini and be sure to bring some of their award winning dessert wine home for family and friends! Such a rich history, amazing people, and the best wine Greece has to offer!

    Best Experience!
The Wines of Santorini was the best tasting with six of their lovely wines and this small family winery in a perfect little village. Small bites were paired with each wine. Wonderful explanations provided on wines. Loved It!

Small but very high quality winery
Tucked away in a quiet corner of beautiful Megalochori village is this more low-key winery. There is no space for coachloads of cruise ship tourists and it is all the better for it. The tour was informative and the staff very welcoming. We loved the mix of tradition with modern viticulture, and the quality of the wines was outstanding. They’re on Google Maps so easy to find just off the main Fira - Perissa road with frequent public bus service. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly good white, rose, and red wines
I lived in SF for 10+ years and Rome for 1.5 years, my wife her whole life in the Bay Area, and we have tried a lot of wine. We went here thinking there might be one or two good white wines, if that. Instead we were blown away by the quality of the white, rose, and red wines. Very interesting, refined, and complex wines. Good service as well. Check this out if you care about wine quality rather than a nice view.

    The perfect family winery
A lovely family run winery that does very good wine. Perfect way to experience some of the Santorini wines and have a tour of a very old winery. The price is a lot better than other options at Santorini and the people are very accommodating really making you feel part of the family.

Great Winery to visit in Greece!
The winery is a must stop! The experience and hospitality was amazing. My wife and I visited during our honeymoon and received top notch service. The family feel you get is what makes it one of the better wineries we visited during our time in Greece. Our host, Georgia, was absolutely amazing and was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend making this a stop if you have time.

    Very Nice Experience
If you are a wine aficionado , you should definitely go pay a visit to this winery. Small and still family owned after many generation, you can experience a genuine wine tasting with very clear and good explanations. The perfect way to end a nice day on the island and much better in our opinion than other places which were too touristic and where we were treated like a number. Cherry on the cake: the wines were very good.

    Wonderful wine & lovely staff!
Visited on my own after walking past a sign pointing to a winery, & I am glad that I did! Welcoming & helpful staff. Did a tasting & learnt lots about the different wines & the vineyards in Santorini. Would recommend checking it out if you’re in the area 😀

A very refined experience of very fine wines.
I would highly recommend visiting Gavalas winery if interested in wine. It was a beautiful experience and so easy to access in the middle of Megalochori. As it is a small vineyard it was a really personalised wine tasting with great attention to detail. I was lucky to have Georgia as my hostess. As a graduate of Oenology, she was really passionate about wines and gave exceptional detail on Santorini wines and grapes. The tasting included 6 tastings which include a lovely food tasting plate with each item paired to taste with each wine. A beautiful experience in every way. Great way to learn about Santorini wine making.

10 OUT OF 10 MUST DO IN SANTORINI
this was an incredible experience highlighted by Nadia's, our host, knowledge of not only wine but also the history of santorini and culture overall. We believe she made the experience much better. We recommend to do this one big time, you will not regret it and the wines were incredible, such a good variety and very interesting story behind them.

Great family winery in Megalochori and charming little tour through their facility. The best part was Christina! She studied winemaking at the university, spoke perfect English, was very affable and extremely engaging!! She made us feel part of the Gavalas family. She was one of the highlights of our trip to Santorini!!

Loved most of the wines even though the blue bottle and mavrotrafano were pur favorites. We found the blue bottle in the US and bought a whole box.

Wine and experience was amazing. We learned about Santorini grapes and how much better the wine tastes compared to the US white wines!

Dear travellers and wine lovers, below are my comments on our visit to Gavalas Winery in Oct 2023. I hope my sharings help you make informed decisions on your trip! Cheers!

Positives:
The place is cosy antique and keeps an elegant vibe.

The brand is a beautiful family business legacy with exciting stories.

The wines are well-recognised all over the world, and it is worth it to try every single one.

Very unique wines; I loved the experience and the pairing.

Impeccable bathroom and in general the location is tidy, clean and very well presented.

90% of the staff were super kind, caring, welcoming and flexible (I visited the place with my mom, who doesn’t drink, and they were super open to doing the tasting only for me)

In my perception, you can feel the love and the passion for wine!
Vinsanto was formidable❤️

Cons:

The host who guided the tasting (I cannot tell was a sommelier) was inexperienced, didn’t understand English well, was a bad listener, and rarely looked into our eyes; bizarre behaviour.

The amounts of wine of the taste were way less than the ones received in all my other wine tastings across Santorini. (I visited six wineries in total).

Although you can find signs to get into the place, we had no clue which one was the place. We stayed knocking at the door with no answer; few people left, and when we were leaving, someone found the area was open with the door closed.

Conclusion:

It is worth it to visit and experience interesting wines and a brand with an immense legacy.

The wines were nice, but found the desert wine too sweet for me. Not as much explanation or interaction as in another tour we took & we used the same glass for all 4 tastings. Overall good just not as impressive as Boutari

What a great experience and fun way to try several great Santorini wines at the same time. Our wine specialist was so friendly and helpful, she even gave us a list of her favorite restaurants on the island. Above and beyond. The small tour of the winery is great too. Highly recommend!

This vineyard produces outstanding wines. This is a five generation boutique winery. Their white wines are exceptional. Nykteri and Santorini are lovely medium bodied dry whites. The volcanic soil of Santorini gives them a unique quality and a wonderful taste to the palette. Their Vin Santo variety is the best I have tasted on the island. It is raisin fruity and semi sweet so it does not overpower the wine. There are several types of wine tastings available, and you do need to reserve in advance. Well worth the time to tour and taste the wines.
