When we arrived at the site there were about 4 bus loads of children about to leave and another 4 just arriving which made for a noisy half hour or so. Once the children had dispersed themselves around the site mostly unsupervised by the teachers it was easy to get around the site. There are lots of placks with information... More

We visited Ancient Messini as part of an organised coach tour; our only regret was that we didn't have longer. It was lovely wandering around the temple , theatre and forums in the late afternoon sun. The stadium and gymnasium are particularly well preserved , so allow plenty of time to soak in the calm . As you return to... More

• In a valley near Mavromatis is the ancient city of Messene. It was established in 369 BC, over the site of the previous Ithome, by a Theban general, who freed the Messenians from the Spartans. Prepare yourself for an extended visit, since this very old city full of "must see" places, and to walk around in this vast area... More

If you happen to be in southern Peleoponnisou it is well worth the effort to see this site. It is spread out over a large area and you really have to be in the mood to walk. It is very well maintained.

In 369 BCE, after banishing the Spartans, a Theban general began the construction of one of the most beautifully located cities in Greece. Merely a half hour drive from Kalamata - well sign posted on good roads, brings you to the pretty village of Mavromati, a horse shoe of houses spread below the veritable Mount Ithome. Pass through the village... More

we visited the ancient messini ruins, not too far form kalamata. it is easy to find and looks not like much from the outside. it is actually larger and nicer that you might think from the outside. most parts have a comprehensive sign telling a little bit about what you see (it is a bit old fashioned that way --... We spent three days in Kalamata primarily to visit archaeology sites some of which are very difficult to locate even with maps and GPS. We found this one relatively easy, approaching from the east to the ancient gates and castle and protective walls which unfortunately failed to protect them from the Spartans, to the main site 2km west which has... Wonderful large site that is quite easy to access and wander around. Scale and layout cannot fail to impress and much clearer feel for the history than more well known ancient Olympia and the stadium is much more spectacular. Easy to seek out with electronic map guidance and so worth the effort. The large site allows individuals and groups to... More

I saw good write-ups for Ancient Messini in guide books, but even these didn't get over the huge scale of the place. With theatres and a stadium, plus colonnades of pillars still standing, it is a really excellent place to visit. The museum is a little disappointing and, having seen this first, acted to deflate a little. But once you... More

The public buildings (temples, stadium, theater etc) have been fully excavated and largely restored. A large part of the outside fortifications is still standing. The overall effect is impressive. Gives you an idea of an ancient Greek city.
