We went on an organised trip with Thomson. It was just a few hours but it was stunning. There is a shop etc there to pop into. The views were breathtaking. Enjoy. Make sure you wear a sturdy pair of shoes, some of the walks...More

Get the number 81 from Funchal at the side of the cable car. It is 3.30 euro. Check the weather first! There is a lovely little church in the village. Then I climbed to the look out and walked all the way down to the...More

Went here on a beautiful sunny day, but as its so high up the weather changed dramatically, it was cold and extremely windy. The walk up the steps is not for the faint hearted, very steep. Worth it for the amazing view of valley below...More

The views from the Mirador were spectacular (just make sure you can see the top before you journey up). The village is just an expensive tourist centre.

When you read how the Nuns retreated here to avoid rape and pillage, from marauding pirates, you picture a simplistic, secular setting, much like the Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus. Far from it. Curral das Freiras is a sprawling town with many other villages nearby. It...More

This is another essential visit when in Madeira. Nestled deep in a valley with access now through a tunnel it is a very nostalgic place. Still visible above the village you can see the old road, now closed, which was the only access to the...More

We were lucky enough to visit here with a very knowledgeable local taxi driver who gave us a history lesson regarding the valley on the way there. Despite my fear of heights I was pleasantly surprised to find a plateau with cafe, bar and gift...More

Once you go to the village, have a coffee or snack in the restaurant and look in awe around you at the towering mountains, you can then go up to the lookout and look down thousands of feet to where you just had coffee.

We came there for lunch (1-2 p.m.). The sun was shining, the clouds were under the feet :) So, try this part of the day, but anyway it's hard to guess the weather ir Madeira. You should be ready for anything

As indicated in other comments, if you just want to "visit" the Nuns' Valley, principally Eira to Serrado and the road between it and Funchal, then you can do this and other things in one day. However, if you also want to... More

Hello! Do i understand it right - we can take the 81 bus to eire do serrado, and then we can walk down to the village? (how long the walk takes)? And is there a bus from the village (so we dont have to go back up). is it the same bus (nr81)?
