About
Jose Maria da Fonseca is one of Portugal's largest and most prestigious wine companies, begun in 1834 and run with undiminished passion since that date by the same family. The winery is in the charming village of Vila Nogueira de Azeitao, where visitors are welcome to tour the museum and cellars where many of Fonseca's wines are aged, including Periquita, Portugal oldest red wine. Another must-see is the Setubal Moscatel cellar, in which wines as old as the company itself slumber in their hallowed and tranquil vault. These Moscatels belong to the private collection of the Soares Franco family, of whom the sixth generation now heads the company. The tour ends with a wine tasting. At the Wine Shop you may buy that special wine or gourmet regional product for a friend.Tours occurs everyday from 10.00am to 12.00, and from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

    Nice Winery Visit
I love visiting Wineries. The tour was interesting, if a tad long. We then had a brief descriptive tasting of a couple of nice wines. I actually bought one of them to bring home to Canada, which, sadly, we have already drunk. A nice place to stop.

    Family visit.
So good we had to have a second visit. We took our visiting family for the wine tour and premium tasting. Once again, we were fortunate enough to have Rafael as our guide through the family's history, organisation and the different wine/Moscatel methods - from vine to bottle. He is highly knowledgeable on all aspects of wine production - it is not a dry talk but an exciting and captivating tour. The tasting session after the tour was enjoyable and an excellent experience. I can fully understand why this is the number one tour in Azeitao.

The last stop on what had been a very long day tour of Evora was the Jose Maria da Fonesca Winery. This was located in the village of Azeitao on the Setubal Peninsula south of Lisbon. Driving west from Evora we passed several fields of grapes including those of the winery we were visiting before finally arriving in Azeiao and then to the Casa-Museu José Maria Da Fonseca located in the centre of the village and a short distance from the modern winery.

The Jose Maria da Fonesca Winery is the oldest table wine company in Portugal founded in 1834 and the original buildings now serve as the museum and shop for the company. Seven generations of the family have been involved with the company since its founding and one of the latest was our host and guide.

We were given a brief but very informative lecture on the history of wine making in Portugal and of the company itself and it’s numerous awards. Then taken on a tour of the original buildings and shown both two small grape fields, green and red, both still in use and several pieces of ancient wine making tools and implements. The bulk of the tour was in the enormous cellars where large barrels of various wines are stored. An explanation of how long they must remain in here was given and we were shown a special locked cellar where a vintage reserved for only the family and only used on special occasions is stored.

After we were taken back to the main building and into the tasting room which is connected to the on-site store. Here we were each given a glass of their red and white table wines to sample as some crackers to cleanse the pallet. After we were free to purchase as many bottles of wine as we wished at quite reasonable prices.

Overall it was an excellent tour and the only downside I thought was we were the last group to go through and the large group before us were still in the tasting room when we arrived and this made this part of the tour seem a bit crowded and rushed as opposed to the casual pace of the rest of the tour.

The tour cost including tastings was included in our all-day tour package otherwise it is 8.50 Euros and reservations are highly recommended.

Nice guided tour but somewhat inconsistent information on when guided tours are starting and in what languages. Winetasting should preferably be accompanied by some more wording on the specific wines.

My husband & I visited the Jose Maria de Fonseca winery as part of an organized tour. We were delighted with the experience. Were greeted by a lovely, engaging winery employee who provided a detailed yet succinct historical overview of the family/winery, grapes utilized, and overall process. Information was imparted by the guide with lighthearted humor & sincerity. One gathered that she (so sorry believe name to be Anna) had great admiration for the family & the vineyard's standing in the world of Portuguese wines. Her eyes twinkled when she spoke about the Fonsecas & the making of a very, very special reserve Moscatel. Lovely grounds, impressive aging barrels, and a comfortable tasting room.

The tour lady (the lady, Adriana, from the winery)was very rude. Asking people where they are coming from and making remarks that if someone wants to learn Portuguese, they need Learn Brazilian first. Since when is Brazilian it’s own language?! It is just like saying, if you’re from USA you don’t speak English you speak American . Then made a remark about the Spanish people killing people when the colonized Argentina, Chile etc. But the Portuguese people stole all the goods,
Gold, jewelry from Brazil, making the Brazilian people thieves. But at least they didn’t kill the native people like the Spanish did so because of that at least we are better off, because we were colonized by the Portuguese. Also, she asked someone else where they were from and they said USA and before they could specify the state she cut him off and said with an attitude that, that’s like saying I’m from Europe.

Dear Storyteller514894, Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review about your visit to the Casa Museu José Maria da Fonseca. We regret the experience you had and your feedback. Are you sure the visit you describe was really to the José Maria da Fonseca winery in Azeitão? We don't have any guide called Adriana nor it's customary to ask the nationality of our visitors (only for statistical purposes and at the ticket office). It's even against our policy to underestimate any nationality, race or religion. If possible we would be grateful if you could send us an e-mail (enoturismo@jmfonseca.pt) with more detailed description of your visit, day and time ideally, if you came with a travel agency or by your own, so that we can open an internal investigation. We are once again sorry and look forward to hearing from you. See you soon! José Maria da Fonseca Winery Team
