Completed in 2002, the Alqueva Dam is a hydro-electric dam and its creation formed the largest reservoir in Europe. There is an elevated viewpoint on the hill above the southern end of the dam, and another viewpoint with a small carpark on the northern end of the dam. The reservoir behind was very low when I visited due to the absence of rain for months in the region. There is a road which runs along the top of the dam which will take you to Moura, which is also worth visiting.

From the top of the dam, the panoramic view of the lake and the Alentejo landscape is stunning, providing a moment of tranquility and contemplation. In addition to the technical aspect, the environmental importance of the project is highlighted, with the creation of new habitats and the Attraction of various bird species.

In short, the visit to Alqueva combines engineering and nature in a harmonious way, being an enriching and reflective experience. I highly recommend.

The lake formed by the Alqueva Dam has created a massive expanse of water that has spawned a number of new plantations nearby - but the generation of hydro power seems to be off and on due to low water levels during the summer months. It was also expected to generate the local tourist industry but that hasn’t happen yet - we saw a few camper vans - parking for free near Monsaraz - but these guys don’t spend money locally. Plenty of free parking - take a hat in the summer it is scorching hot out on the dam - there are no public WCs that we could find.

Having stayed in the region of the Alqueva lake, we couldn't leave without driving on the dam itself.
Fortunately, there is a large parking on top of the dam so one can walk around and admire both the lake, on one side, and the dam on the other one.
Very impressive piece of hydraulic Portuguese engineering.

We visited this dam on a very cold windy day. We found it interesting even though we were only there for 10 minutes and viewed both sides. The ‘Information Board’ was good, written in 3 languages, so this helped us understand the importance of this large dam.

Nice convenient car park and footpath enables you to stop when driving over the dam to admire the view of the lake. You can see both sides of the dam and admire the fantastic feat of engineering. The view over the lake is fantastic and if you follow a footpath along the shores of the lake towards Moura for about 15m there is a monument to the buiders of the dam with an interesting explanation.
