- antonioBrussels, Belgium3 contributionsImmersive experience with Jeison :)We did a tour with a guide called jeison hernandez, he was amazing and we learned so much thanks to him. He had a telescope with him so we could see some animals in details. We saw different types of birds, tarentula, aras, frogs .. without him we wouldn’t have seen the real spirit of the forest.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2022

- CannuckkLangley, Canada358 contributionsGreat Wildlife Viewing in a Relaxed Quiet EnvironmentWe had a very enjoyable 4 hour experience in Carara National Park. Contrary to my normal “modus operandi”, where I would usually convince my wife to tour the park ourselves at our own pace, on the morning of our excursion we What’s App’d Maurice ( clearly the most popular local guide based on TA reviews) to see if he could include us. He was very responsive, and an hour later we were wandering the forest trail ( secondary entrance, on the Tarcoles bridge side) guided by Maurice. It was nice he was able to loan us a pair of binoculars and a bird guide book, as we didn’t come as well prepared as we should have. We were surprised at the ability for him to use his high powered scope with our smartphone cameras to get some surprisingly good close up photos. Our tour lasted 2 hours, which was a bit of a surprise to me, given many other reviews suggested a tour duration of 3-4 hours. But, in those two hours we saw much wildlife, and learned much about the parks flora and fauna, so really, hard to complain. Most of what we saw was solely due to Maurice knowing where to look. As an experiment, after our guided tour we went back to the main entrance and wandered on our own for an hour and a half, to see if you can really get much out of the forest experience on your own. If you are observant you can I think; my wife saw several animals we hadn’t encountered on the guided hike, So the moral of the story here is, book a guide if you can, you’ll see far more than if you tour on your own. If you choose not too, it can still be a worthwhile visit.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2023
- Shawn J23 contributionsNice parkReally nice park with some great trials to walk through. We didn't see any wildlife in the afternoon so if you want a chance at seeing some animals, I recommend going in the morning. Still a fun experience walking through a beautiful area of Costa Rica. A reasonable price for 1-2 hours.Visited January 2023Written 19 February 2023
- GaryM3 contributionsA walking encyclopedia!I met Maurice by chance after I had spent a morning in Carara not finding many birds. Even though I was not on his tour, he immediately asked if I had seen the Manakin lek and led me and his party of two down a path to the lek. Hmm! A nice earthy 'dance floor' but no birds. He didn't seem deterred and proceeded to click his fingers. It wasn't long before an Orange - collared Manakin revealed itself and posed beautifully for my camera. Maurice was obviously pleased that we had seen the bird and was so enthusiastic that I immediately arranged a tour with him for a few days later. I didn't regret it! Maurice managed to locate birds and animals with ease, identifying many by call alone. But not satisfied with this, he would then say what page of the Costa Rica Bird guide book that particular bird featured on. The man is a walking encyclopedia! He was very proficient at mimicking many bird calls and as I had told him that I had not seen a Trogon so far on my holiday, he was determined to spot one for me. When he finally heard one, deep in the jungle, he struck up a 'conversation' with it and proceeded to stalk it through the trees and foliage. Even after he spotted it and told me where it was, it still took me a while to realise that the dark shape motionless on a branch was in fact a Black-throated Trogon. I was in awe at Maurice's ability to spot birds in such dim light and in dense jungle. For Carara, I would highly recommend a guide and you won't get any better than Maurice! Thank you Maurice!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2023

Maurice manages to find the tiniest birds and bats. He is exceptionally knowledgeable about what to find in Carara and also Costa Rica in general. We also signed up for his crocodile river tour. Well worth the extra cost. We highly recommend this.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2023
- Edyta OBoston, Massachusetts788 contributionsNice walking trailsExcited to get into the forests of Costa Rica we chose to came to Carara National Park right off Rt 34. A huge parking lot greeted us along with polite guides offering their services. We chose the binoculars and self-guided tour instead. Clean restrooms, potable water and tickets with no line ($10). There were several short trails available (~1. 2km each) and within 3 hours of walking we completed all of them: Sendero trail, Quebrada Bonita trail, Las Avaceas and Linear trail. Trails are easy and mostly flat. We heard many birds but saw very few ( canopy is high). It was a nice relaxing experience.Visited March 2023Written 12 March 2023

We were all so impressed with his knowledge, ability to spot animals and then position his scope so we could see the animal. It was a great tour of the park and was not overly crowded with tourists. We saw a bunch of different wildlife including birds, monkeys and white bats!! - all of which Maurice found for us and pointed out to us along with any relevant information. The photos I uploaded were taken by Maurice with my phone that he placed on his scope. We highly recommend Maurice for your tour. In order to enjoy this park you need a good guide. We were lucky to have an excellent guide, Geovanna from G@R Adventures. She spent with us over 3 hours in which we were able to see: monkeys, a sloth, macaws, and other birds, spiders (including Taratula), frogs, and lizards. The main attraction was to watch the magnificent macaws. Geovanna knew exactly where to find them.

We enjoyed a couple hours hiking in this CR national park on our way to our primary destination in the Puntarenas Province near Dominical. We stopped as it was on the way from San Jose and were eager to start seeing huge rainforest trees and wildlife. You purchase your tickets online and they are inexpensive, around $10 USD each.
The trails were easy walks with some of it paved or at least well marked. There were several platforms for viewing, rotting away and in disrepair, and some muddy trails, but it is a rainforest after all.
We saw several poison dart frogs, lizards, iguanas, leaf cutter ants, centipedes and most of the wildlife at the river where we saw several white faced capuchin monkeys and an agouti (looks like a giant gerbil).

Booked entrance tickets prior to arrival because that's the only way in. Met at the gate by the "next guide in line." Got lucky and had a great guide. Best thing we saw was a black & green poison frog. And we actually saw 3 of them during the hike. But NO macaws. Supposedly we were here in the wrong season. The macaws are now down on the beaches. Just FYI.
Having been on MANY hikes in several different national parks in Costa Rica, we didn't really see anything new here. But we've renamed this park "Mosquito National Park" because we were eaten alive. We had on long sleeves & long pants + mosquito repellent, but we were hounded by mosquitos the entire time.
Not our favorite park -- but at least it wasn't crowded. And the guides you can pick up at the entrance are all knowledgeable, licensed, and helpful. Can't imagine going through here without a guide -- would have missed soooo much!

Got in touch with Maurice (whatsapp +50688896061) two days before my intented visit to the park. Super quick and easy communication and arrangement. When I got to the park, Antonio (one of Maurice's guys) was waiting for me, and together with a sweet couple we set out onto the trail. We saw sooo many animals thanks to Antonio's sharp eyes and knowledge of preferred spots. Two types of toucans, two types of bats, woodpecker, lizards of all sizes, poisonous frogs, monkeys, deer, various other birds, agutis and even puma tracks. To top it all off he took us to Tarcoles to see Macaws. Got amazing pictures of the animals.
Make sure to order the entrance ticket to the park online. I forgot but they were kind enough to help me there.
After reading of daily crowds at Manuel Antonio, I settled for Carara. So glad I did, because we only passed about 4 other couples during our 3h in the park.

Carara National Park is an awesome place to visit because of its location in a transition zone. The AirBnB host arranged a tour with Jeison Hernandez, Birding and Nature Tours, and he was fabulous. He was very knowledgeable about the park and history, its inhabitants and the trees, plants, fungi, etc. In addition to hearing a streak-chested antpitta bird and a couple of toucans, we saw them, too! We saw a fer-de-lance pit viper snake, a ghost bat, a variety of mushrooms, a number of strangler figs, and much more during the three hour tour. Definitely recommend a tour with Jeison.

WOW! Couldn't get into Manuel Antonio National Park so ended up here. How fortuitous! So few people. Our guide, Antonio, was worth 10 times the price we paid. He found green frogs, a white-winged bat, deer, scarlet macaws. Then we ran around chasing the rustling of monkeys. We saw howler monkeys and about 20 spider monkeys swinging above us with babies. Antonio spent an extra 30 minutes with us so we could also see white-faced monkeys. Got up close with them. A nature experience of a lifetime. If it weren't for Antonio, I probably would have only seen a lot of trees. Best money ever spent.

You don’t need a guide. You can get one, and support the local Konomi, but it’s totally up to you. We did not get one. Just take your time. Be quiet and listen to the rainforest. Look on the ground, look up in the trees. Look for leaves and nuts falling.
It is hot, it is humid, and there are a lot of bugs. It is the rainforest after all. Bring water and bug spray.
The trailers are easy. And kid friendly. Our crew is 7 and 5 and had zero problems.
I highly recommend it, it is absolutely stunning!

Had an amazing day of birding with birding guide Maurice Velasquez Pizzaro (+506 8889 6061). We saw over 40 species of birds, 2 species of monkeys, poison frogs, deer, and lizards. Maurice is truly an expert and I highly recommend his private tour for avid birders and nature enthusiasts.

Hi, I believe all National Parks are open every day of the year subject to any new Covid restrictions & operate under 50% capacity currently but don't waste your time, all you are likely to see is trees, very bad park & questionable staff. Gave a very bad impression to me. Best regards

The animals are completely wild. It sure spiraled to me that whether you saw anything specific was never guaranteed.

Buenas tardes,
Gracias

You do not need an SUV to visit Carara. The entrance to the park is right on the main road and once you park you will walk in on the trails leading from the main entrance. No car is needed inside the park.

I agree. In fact, I thinky it may take longer to get on the road so you are best off waiting to go the next day and this way you do not feel rushed.
