Visited Loutro for a long weekend and on the Saturday we explored the headland (Άκρα Μούρες) to the south and west of the ferry port out past the old venetian castle and Church of Sotiros Christou. We carried on round until the next bay and the old village of Finikas or Phoenix.

If you plan to go by this route then I would allow at least 45 -60 mins minimum in each direction and would suggest it is best to have hard soles on whatever footwear you are using as the path is quite rocky.

When we stopped for a drink at Old Phoenix Hotel we were told there was a shorter route back to Loutro over the hill instead of around the peninsula. Although shorter in distance this can take about the same time as the paths are quite steep and not always obvious. The bonus is that this way takes you past the Koules of Loutro (old Turkish fortress)

After a 2 hour hike from Hora Sfakion you end up at this amazing fortress, now taken over by sheep and goat herds!
The view is great and is definately worth to visit!

This was my 2nd visit to Loutro and knew nothing about it the first time. Did a lil research and hiked to Loutro to find this piece of history. No signs or given info about the fort or castle but very beautiful and a nice view. Go check it out

It is so nice up there and not so difficult to go up there. You can get in for free. The view to Loutro and all the sea and Gavdos island is very beautiful!!

Found it while walking over the top of the track to Loutro. An intriguing location, worth stopping for 5 minutes to explore.
