The entire peninsula of Snaefellsnes is an amazing attraction requiring at least a full day.
It's located some 2 hours drive northwest from Reykjavik, however, I suggest lodging somewhere on the peninsula in order not to waist time driving from/to capital.
We stayed in a countryside lodge (Kirkjufell Guesthouse - very good) close to town of Grundarfjordur and started our day before dawn at 7.30 PM.

Snaefellsnes is nicknamed "Small Iceland" as around it you'll see all main features of this amazing country: waterfalls, mountain peaks, glaciers, lighthouses, black sand beaches, isolated churches in the middle of nowhere, volcanoes,...
Get up early and start your drive. Main attractions are:
- Snaefellsjokul NP with its volcano and glacier,
- Kirkjufell Mountain (one of the most photographed on entire island),
- Kirkjufellfoss waterfalls,
- Saxholl Crater,
- Djupalonssandur black sand beach,
- Londranga basalt stones emerging from the ocean,
- Hellnar and Arnarstapi villages,
- Gatklettur and Stone Bridge cliffside formations,
- Budakirkja black Church,
- Bjarnarfoss waterfall,
- in between the above many amazing nature scenery and small villages. Enjoy.

We visited the Snaefellsnes Peninsula with a small group from Reykjavik and one of the stops we made was at the Snaefellsjokull National Park. This area is jaw dropping. Such diverse natural scenery, from the rugged coastline to the mountains with jagged peaks and high cliffs. It is truly a beautiful area that deserves more than just a couple hours of viewing.

A gorgeous park with much variety - many volcanic areas, craters, cliffs, beaches, light houses. Just be sure to do your research before coming. We didn't and missed many things we would have preferred doing/seeing over the things we did. Check the internet. Some guide books (like Rick Steves) have nothing. A highlight for us was seeing an Arctic fox near the very excellent 5 star visitor center within the Park.

I would have wanted more time to explore this park. I feel you could go back here for years and still be filled by awe. It's wonderful.

This beautiful national park is a must see. It is very diverse and has magnificent views. Make sure, if you rent a car, you have plenty of gas in the tank, since it is an isolated area.

This is a beautiful national park with diverse stops and things to see. Also the weather changes within the NP and it adds a lot to the atmosphere.

There is a rough road across the western side of the Snaefellsjokull glacier. However, check to make sure the road is open before you venture on it. It was closed when we were there in May. However, that didn't prevent us from exploring back roads across the park. Great view of the ocean from several locations and beautiful volcanic landscape

There are a wide variety of trails and points of interest to visit in this fabulous park.

We hiked out to Londrangar to sea the cliffs filled with seabirds (mainly Northern Fulmar since we were late in the season). We saw an orca from the trail!

We also drove out to Öndverðarnest and Skálasnagaviti lighthouses - at the northwestern part of the park. Gravel roads meant slow driving but the views were worth it! The neon orange lighthouse against the dramatic clouds was a photographer’s delight!

We also visited Saxholl Crater - less dramatic than Eldborg crater - but it’s award-winning winding stairs were worth the visit.

There were many other hikes we wish we had time for but those will have to wait for another visit!
