4.9.2020 We drove in the direction from Chania ( + 38 °C) far enough to find the castle closed and under reconstruction. There was no mention of it on the Internet. It's pretty unfair to tourists, lost half a day. For the next time, it would like to better inform the public about whether the castle is open. Otherwise, the fortress looks very impressive. Frangokastello is for people the prefer to avoid hustle and bustle. The castle is really just a shell these days and is like lots of old defenses worth a look if only to get an impression of life under siege. We drove down from Rethimno and it is a lovely drive passing through some very impressive scenery. The drive takes about an hour or so. Once at Frangokastello there is a beach and a few tavernas where you can recharge your batteries before heading home.

With the word "Castle" you create other expectations. In fact this old Venetian fortress is a well preserved shell of a castle, so in fact it are ruins. Despite that it is impressive (though small in size) and nicely situated, overlooking two beaches.

The Castle of Frangokastello is a very beautiful Castle from a far, but on close inspections the Castle needs a lot of renovation and TLC. We Brits are lucky we have the National Trust which looks after our Ancient Houses, Castles etc. we have come to realise that we need to look after our history for future generations so they can be proud of there history. This Castle will be eventually lovingly restored in the future and at the moment just needs to be lovingly restored to its former splender. The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 and was captured by the Turks or the Ottomans in 1828 and the rest is history. The castle is near to the beach a natural beach of beauty. You can visit the Castle and then put on you bathing costume and enjoy the tranquil waters while viewing the castle. You can get a bite to eat at the local Taverna or just have a nice pleasant drink it is up to you.

The castle is quite a lovely attraction on your way to the beach but when we visited most of its internal area was closed for reconstruction so basically the tower was the only available part.
None of the internal buildings are preserved so it's mostly the wall and the tower. However with its symbolic entrance fee I think it's a very vice to visit place if you're staying at Frangocastello or passing by.

The castle’s condition is deteriorating and is in need of some TLC but when we arrived, scaffolding was up. Worth a visit and afterwards wander down to the beach for a swim

Difficult road to approach, nice setting, but not enough exhibits to explain the history. I am sure it can be improved

The castle is not something awesome only by itself but the place, the castle and the beach is combined are something unique. It worth a visit and of course go to the beach around it after the visit.
