Breathtaking views at every curve, be sure to stop and enjoy the look-out points! We spent our entire first morning after our flight landed driving the western part of Sao Miguel - just beautiful!!!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,284 contributionsSee the lakes at shore level. Most people’s tours take you to the various Miradouro’s where you get the elevated view of the two crater lakes. But I totally agree with the reviewer below, if you have the opportunity, take the winding road down to Sete Cidades and specifically the bridge that separates Lagoa Verde from Lagoa Azul. From here you may not see the blue or green but you get a totally different perspective to these two stunning bodies of water. And there are plenty of activities and pleasant walks to do from this location.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 August 2024
- Susan TDublin, Ireland37 contributionsMiradouro da Vista do Rei for the best viewThe lakes are beautiful - up close and from a distance. The best spot for viewing (and the spot you’ll see in almost all photos of the lakes!) is Miradouro da Vista do Rei. Well worth the short drive up.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 September 2024

Decided on a short walk around Lagoa Verde as my map indicated a circular route all the way round. Started up a well made track on the left side of the lake as you look at it from the road. All very easy until I got to the woods where there was some fallen down netting across the path. I wondered, but pressed on. There have obviously been some quite severe storms and landslips and I soon encountered a large unstable pile of mud, boulders and vegetation which I crossed quickly but carefully. That was just for starters! The next half mile section of old path and rotting wooden steps was blocked by fallen trees and debris at least a dozen times and towards the end there was a horribly steep mud bank that I was only able to cross by grabbing the toughest looking tree roots above and slithering across above a 10 foot drop. What should have taken me 10 minutes turned into a quite stressful half hour. When I had completed this section I looked back and wondered 'what the f**k made me think that was a good idea' - having said that I did get a sort of perverse satisfaction from having managed it. So.... not impossible but definitely not at all easy. You have been warned.

Definitely a post card view and a must do when visiting Azores.
We rented a car, which is the easiest way to reach all these points and take our time, however there are tour buses as well.
Try to avoid if its a cloudy day.

I had seen pictures of these lakes online so had some idea of what to expect. They aren’t as strikingly different in color as some of the pictures lead you to believe, but it is still impressive to see neighboring lakes appearing to be completely different colors. The best viewpoints are high above the lakes and can only be reached by strenuous hiking or with 4x4 vehicles.

These lakes are a “must do” on your Sao Miguel itinerary. Various little car parks where you can leave the car and take a short walk to great view points. Some guide books will point out other view points and a strongly recommend Miradoura da boco do inferno.

At first I just thought these were two lakes. But they are much more. You can hike, bike, drive, picnic, kayak, paddleboard,
and see the lakes from the ground or from above. We rented the paddleboard and kayak at Futurismo Azores Adventures which is located on the lake. The staff was so amazing, friendly and kind. The price to rent a two person kayak was 10 EUROS per hour. These volcanically created lakes offer a sense of peace and tranquility. We did all of the above during our 3 night stay in the quaint town of Sete Cidades.

We have visited similar sights in other parts of the world so it wasn't anything spectacular for us. But definitely go if you haven't had the opportunities we have had in our travels.
