One of the twelve land lords(baro Bhuiyan) Issa khan ruled Bengal in 16th century . He made Sonargaon as the capital of Bengal . Panam was one of the most beautiful city of Bengal in that period. The city was built on twenty acres of land .Basically it was a city of traders . They import from Europe normal cloths and export Muslin .The ruin tells the tale that the city was well planned and well organized . There are two canals and five ponds . Some of the houses had deep well as source of water .The houses were mostly two storied buildings made of bricks. Though some of the decoration were done with iron hardly any iron rods were used in beam and column . But used to make roof . Currently 52 ruined houses are there . Some of them are on the brink of collapse .Withered exposed houses bear sign of centuries ,the wealthy inhabitants, But time took away all . Only the skeleton remained in the abandoned houses . During 1965 war between India and Pak the city was plundered and again in 1971. At one stage govt leased these houses but in 2006 it was cancelled . Now it is under Archeological dept .
The city is 24 Km from city center connected by public transport . Sunday is closed and on Monday visiting hour is from 0130 PM. Since no standard hotel is available around ,visitors are advised to carry pack lunch in case of long day program..

Panam city was established in the late 19th.century as a trading center of cotton fabrics. During Brithis rule Hindu merchant built their residential houses in a colonial style. This area is protected by the Archaeological Department. Sonargoan was old capital of Bengla,it is 30km.away from Dhaka, while making plan to visit must consider the traffic, sometime is quite heavy, you have to go all the away on the highway towards Chittagong. This a good place for day outing, picnic & study tour for the students. You should take you children at least once to give them history of Bengal. There is museum inside the fort, where you will find things related to Mughal period

Must visit if you are in Bangladesh. A flourishing city, similar to European cities. completely abandoned. We were lucky to get a peep inside a dance-hall, which was otherwise locked. Thanks to our Tour Organizer Mr.Titu & Bangladesh Emerald Tours.

Panam City is also known as "the lost city" or “ghost city” was established in the late 19th century as a trading center of cotton fabrics during British rule. Hindu cloth merchants built their residential houses following colonial style with inspiration derived from European sources. All the buildings in the city were built facing a single road, which is 5 meters wide and 600 meters long. There still remain 52 buildings. The whole city is surrounded with artificial canals. These canals were dug to protect the city from any outside attack. World monument fund listed Panam City in the World 100 ruined city in 2006. Today this area is protected under the department of archaeology of Bangladesh.
