Nice walk with pretty views. Lots of indigenous trees, ebony tree, plants. Conservation. 2-3 hours leisurely walk in nature with fresh air. Family outings. There is also a small museum about the plants and trees in the forest and evolution of Mauritius fauna, plants and trees. Also a small souvenir shop and a restaurant.

Damien and Shane showed us all different Ebony trees and explained this beautiful project. We planted a tree, saw the museum, walked through the forest and had a magnificant view over the sea. Damien and Shane, thank you.

This is really the place worth visiting if you go to Chamarel.
There is a wonderful hike to go up to the top, worth the effort to access a great view point on the coast.
This is an educative walk so you get plenty of details about the plants and such, and can have a free guided tour on a suspended platform about the endemic plant species that can only be found in this natural reserve.
For the lazy ones, there are some Jeeps which can take you up or down, but I would really recommend the walk by the cliff, which is absolutely stunning.

The Ebony Forest was the highlight of our trip to Mauritius. We got very lucky with Avesh as our tour guide through the Raised Walkway. He was super knowledgeable and easily answered all questions we had related to the conservation efforts and ecology in general. It’s clear that he’s passionate about his job and who could blame him - the work being done at the Ebony Forest is amazing. Not only are they replanting Ebony trees, but they are also trying to remove non-native flora and fauna and restore the area to the way it was hundreds of years ago. It has to be seen to fully appreciate what a painstaking task this is.

I think the Ebony Forest is an attraction that everyone can enjoy. It was the best bit of Chamarel by far. There is a museum at the beginning of the walk which is also highly recommended.

Endemic Birding Tour. Recommended by Pamela from Cathay Tours. With a 13 yo and 80+ parents, the tour was one of wonder, teamwork, effort and rewarded with some lifers, viewing endemic species(native exclusively to Mauritius), and an educational balance of conservation, eco tourism, and shared experiences.

Avish was nothing short of professional, patient, and knowledgeable.

Highly recommended for birders and non-birders alike. Be prepared for rain and or sun, eco friendly repellent sold in the gift store, and memorable photos.

The drive is relatively short, bringing us to the walkway through the forest, this immersive walk through the trees is magical. The canopy is dense; no problems with vertigo as some have feared.
Our guide was very informative; we had not imagined that such a high proportion of the lush greenery we see in Mauritius is not endemic. it was great to hear about the work being done to plant more ebony trees from seeds collected on the site.
He also took us to an incredible viewpoint over the island. Magnificent!
This was a brilliant and memorable experience.
Oh, and there's a great information centre and a really nice gift shop, too.

For those who question the "greeness" of the jeep tours, the forest would not have been accessible to me without this, it's not just for the lazy as some reviewers have implied.

We thank you for your visit and contribution to our project. As you mentioned the jeep tour is available for people who cannot access our reserve on foot. The jeep tours have been reduced significantly to only 4 tours a day to reduce the impact of the vehicle.

Our birdwatching tour at Ebony Forest was incredible. At Ebony Forest, they are putting countless efforts into the reintroduction of the native flora and fauna of Mauritius.

Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable, which really enabled us to leave the tour with so many learnings. What they're doing here is truly a wonderful project and the view from the top of the birdwatching forest hike is breathtaking.

The Endemic Birdwatching Tour at Ebony Forest can't be recommended enough!

Wonderfull walks set out within the trees. Followed by amazing wood fired pizza in the cafe. If you are unable to walk there is a open land rover to take you to the top. The views are awesome
