The Heaphy is a great track that takes you through mountain forest, tussocklands, lowland forest, along rivers and along the sea. It is quite beautiful. You are able to swim at each of the 3 main huts. It is not a strenuous track & the huts are amazing.

I originally planned to hike the Abel Tazman, but after speaking with those that had hiked both the Heaphy and Tazman, all preferred the Heaphy due to less crowding and no water taxis. Although logistically problematic, the Heaphy diversifys through rain forest hills, along a river through magestic old growth Northern Rata trees, and along pristine coastline. I even got... More

"Great Walk" standard track. Clearly marked & well maintained. Comfortable footwear is best for multiple days on stoney ground. Take your best cushioning socks. Huts are booked in advance. Beds are either lower or upper bunk. Gas & water boiling pots are provided. Can be quicker if you bring your own. Flush toilets, with paper. Solar lighting. Wash basins undercover.... More

The Heaphy Track doesn't have the dazzling alpine views of the Routeburn or Kepler or the sheet majestic beauty of the Milford or swimmable beaches of Abel Tasman, but it just may be our favorite Great Walk out of that list. Three main reasons: it's long so you can easily spend 4 days hiking, you're in a different ecosystem each... More

We chose to fly over from Wellington with Golden Bay Air to Takaka and then got a shuttle bus to Brown Hut where we arrived at about 7.30pm... as planned. We stayed here overnight, all on our own (peace and quiet) and sat in front of a roaring log fire dining on our dip, crackers, cheese and our asparagus quiche... More

This walk is amazing. I did a walk from Kohaihai to Scott's Beach. I really enjoyed the stunning views over the whole area.

Starting at the Golden bay end of the Heaphy Track you an do this walk comfortably over 4 days with 3 nights in the Department of Conservation huts along the way. A more leisurely hike, or with younger children I would recommend at least 5 days and 4 nights. Day one is a steady climb over 17km to the first... More

We were keen to do one of NZ's 'Great Walks' and were recommended the Heaphy. It was fabulous - a personal challenge for each of us, an amazing experience, comfy huts, incredible panoramic views with very changeable scenery and sore feet!! We walked from the Collingwood end and feel that this is the best way to do it but a... More

An absolute classic. Total wilderness, incredible scenery, incredible variety, incredible range of native flora and fauna. Even NZers will find some of the landscapes exotic. Thanks DOC for a stellar effort maintaining the track, huts and signage.

We walked the Heaphy supported by Southern Wilderness, who provided Mike as guide and chef. We loved the variation in eco-system day by day (we took the 4 night, 5 day option, walking from Tasman to West Coast). We enjoyed the 3 new huts and one older variety. Other walkers encountered on the track or in the huts added to... More
