After a short visit to a shrine near Oshino Hakkai, I visited Touenji Temple. It is an ancient Tendai sect temple. It was founded by Kukai during the early Heian period (810-824). It is a large temple. The wife of the deputy chief priest was at the reception desk, so I asked her about the history of the temple.

忍野八海観光のときおとずれました。少し離れているし少し高くなっているのでとても静かで落ち着きます。不動明王さま、聖観音さまなどの仏像があり御朱印の2種類あります。

While touring Oshino Hakkai, we decided to visit Toenji Temple, located to the north of the area. The temple is located about 300m north of Shobu Pond, the northernmost pond of Oshino Hakkai.
It is an ancient temple that was founded in 810 as a training center for Mount Fuji asceticism. The temple was more impressive than we had expected, with cherry trees lining the approach to the temple. We imagine it would be a spectacular sight in flower season.

忍野八海巡りをしていた私たちは、忍野八海の中で一番北側にあった菖蒲池を見た後、さらに奥に進みました。浅間神社へ参拝した後、西に向かうと新名庄川という、緑が美しい、小さな川が流れていました。さらにお宮橋を渡った先にあったのが、東円寺です。
この東円寺は、810年に富士山修行の道場として創建されたという歴史あるお寺です。境内には、本堂のほか、庫裏、鐘楼門、山門、地蔵堂が建ち並ぶ、比叡山延暦寺の末寺です。

忍野お宮橋を渡った正面にあります。御朱印を頂いたら、住職さんがわざわざお堂までいらっしゃって、色々なお話を聞かせてくださいました。忍野八海が「水」の陰のため、「火」の陽を祭ったこのお寺さんにお参りして、バランスを取って、富士山参りに行くのだそうです。素敵なパンフレットも頂きましたし、忍野八海に行かれる方は、是非、このお寺さんもお参りしてください。おすすめです。

忍野八海の中心地から歩いて１０分もかからないほどのところにありますが、他に参詣者はおらず忍野八海の喧騒が嘘のようにとっても静かで落ち着いた雰囲気があって良かったです。参道は桜並木となっていますが、４月２８日では流石に葉桜になっていました。
それでも本堂前には桜が咲いていたり、端午の節句の幟がはためいていたり、鯉のぼりが泳いでいたりと趣があって良かったです。
