Small village in the Hemu grasslands. The village decedents are said to be related through their family trees to the warriors of Genghis Khan.

Hemu Grasslands or Hemu Village is located in Xinjiang, China. It is accessible by taking a two-hour and forty-minute flight from Urumqi to Kanasi and then another 3-hour jorney by car.
This place has been voted by a travel magazine as one of the five most beautiful villages in China. Although it is beautiful througout the four seasons but the colors of the fall would make it very picturesque and is regarded as a paradise for photographers. The access to this place can be difficult during winter.
Accommodation here for visitors are wooden houses, primitive and natural.

Hemu Village has been voted by a travel magazine as one of the five most beautiful villages in China. It is accessable by taking a flight from Urumqi o Kanasi (about two and half hours) and then a car (about three hours). During the fall season, this place is a fairyland on earth. Wooden houses, beautiful fall colors, cultural experience of the Tuva people and traditional local food can make the visit very memorable.

A great experience, great stay, great scenery. The night sun won't set until 10pm, sun rise again as early as 5am, what a great place.

My tour group went in early spring to the Hemu Village for lunch, a village with timber houses and unexpectedly many low-flying falcons. The place was scenic and good for a walk around the houses and the river. In early spring one could still see snowy mountain tops as the snow had not fully disappeared. The village would be much more attractive in autumn (with autumn leaves) or in winter (with snow on timber houses), so there was incentive to re-visit this place in future.

Drive to Hemu village passed through some beautiful grasslands and zigzag mountain roads line up by pine trees. Upon arriving Hemu Village, we visited one of the Tuva Mongol home. We left our footwear outside and used our right leg when entering their home. They are very gracious host and offered us butter milk tea with tit bits and explained their belief and culture to us. They sang their Mongolian song praising the nature, while playing with their typical Mongolian musical instrument was nice to watch. The music was so beautiful to the ears and encouraged us to clap along. Finally the head of the family lead the prayer and asked to pray, make a wish followed by a cup of rice wine. We felt so great full to be invited to their home. Lunched was home cooked meal at the wooden house. We walked around the village, stroll along the river and decided to climb up wooden steps to reach the grassland on the hill. Scenery at the hill top overlooking the whole village, wooden houses, birch trees and the green colors river meandering its way in the village is really majestic. One can either climb up or ride a horse up to the grassland. There was a café near the wooden bridge selling drinks and nice coffee. After the climb we dropped by the café ordered latte and some other drinks, as it is a tourist area it was quite pricey.

This village is very commercialized with many eateries and motels. If you do not mind the rugged path, I would recommend staying a night in the village to catch the landscape during different parts of the day. Best place to do this is the mountain top that is within walking distance from the village center.

Be sure to wear walking shoes as it's a bit of a hike to get up there. The foliage colors here during autumn are indescribable.

Beautiful and relaxing area on the way to Kanas Lake. Lots of Kazakh yurts, the white tents the nomads live in. Horses, sheep and cattle everywhere. Great backdrop with the mountains. Enjoyed travelling through this region.

This place is suitable for a relax trip , more for local chinese people; not really recommend oversea tourists to travel all the way to visit this place, as not much activity or scenery or any historical value place/things .
Kanas national geo park is a better choice to visit
