Beautiful sculptures . Monolith , traditional, with Indian culture. Beautiful must see place near Chennai. They are split into 3 parts. And all are near the beach lighthouse. Be careful on a Sunny day, sunscreens or umbrella.

Most of the sculptured figures and buildings are about 1300 years old and are dramatic. There are over 40 temples in this area but it would be impossible to see them all. There is a point of temple overload, not just the physical moving in the heat to climb and walk to each location, but the realisation that you are trying to take the culture with little background knowledge. So it is pleasantly exhausting after a few hours, and the sadly the desire for air conditioning returns.

The stone cut sculptures of Mahabalipuram is a perfect example of Pallava dynasty at its peak. Many sculptures are still awaiting to be discovered. Most of the pagodas are underwater except one and the one on land is slowly but surely eroded by strong sea breeze. I hope the govt does something to ensure that this beautiful place is preserved for future visitors to this place. Worth a visit if you are in Chennai to see these edifices in all their glory.

Highly recommended visit. Thousands of years ago imagine the use of lathe machine for cutting stones and making pillars. Superb work on rocks depicting Ganga coming down as Bhagirath does the penance.beautiful Lakshmi varaha carvings. The five rathas or actually different types of architecture existing in India during the times is amazing. The huge Krishna butter ball is a natural spectacle. Been there twice. Still will visit again.

Visited this place with my wife last year on way to Pondicherry from Chennai.
Globally renown for its shore temples, Mahabalipuram was the second capital of the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram. 58 kilometres from Chennai on the Bay of Bengal, this tiny sea - side village of Mahabalipuram, is set in a boulder - strewn landscape. Tourists are drawn to this place by its miles of unspoiled beach and rock-cut art. The sculpture, here, is particularly interesting because it shows scenes of day-to- day life, in contrast with the rest of the state of Tamil Nadu, where the carvings generally depict gods and goddesses

If you visit Mahabalipuram you will gaze at exquisite rock cut temples or rather that are some of the finest examples in India. This place has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
In the centre of the village is an immense frieze that was carved in the first century A D which is 12 metres high and 28 metres long!
The hillside is scattered with eight temple porches with bold sculptures inside and there is still one surviving temple that was built in the first century.
Mahalalipuram also has a stone museum where you can watch the stonemasons at work.
