The Mahishasuramardini cave is part of the Mahabalipuram complex but is easily missed because it is a little way from the other temples, however it had some of the most interesting carvings. Especially superb is the panel showing Durga fighting the buffalo-headed demon Mahisha. It is worth learning a bit about Hindu Art and Architecture before visiting. The book on this subject by George Michell is great for this. This cave temple is a must.

There are 2 temples. The bottom one is called the Mahishasura mardini temple, which depicts Durga killing the demon mahishasura. It also has other god and goddesses.
On the top, it is called Iswara temple, which is closed. The sculptures are worth the climb. Also the view from the top. Amazing to think the time period they were constructed. Will visit again

Considering these are all carved out of the stone as it existed, they are quite impressive. Took a little bit of a climb , so take your time if it is hot!

Impressive, especially considering the age. Combined with other temple in the area (The Five Rathas, Shore Temple, Krishna Mandapam ), the area was very interesting.

If the Mahabalipuram group of monuments is an ice-cream, then the Mahishasuramardini Cave is certainly the Cherry on top !!

Together with the other monuments in the surrounding area, this is a must see. The carving is all fabulous and mind-boggling in terms of the effort and craftsmanship dating back over 1000 years
