Many things to see. Many temples around the light house compound are curved into rock. Beautiful statues and wall curving - demonstrated the skillful craftman of ancient civilisation. Many rough cut areas as one can still see the chisel marks. Nevertheless, magnificant views. Entrance is free. Other sites such as the Shore Temple and Five Ratas are a must visit... More

Lovely town , with lots of traditional shops selling Art , crafts , beautiful fabrics, I even had a silk dress made for me in few hours and a lovely silk shirt. Good beach but be careful , as not the best for swimming, only a dip . Fascinating stone carvings and temples. Lots to see and do especially try... More

This has to be one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the 4th-5th Century Pallava Dynasty of Southern India. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rock carvings are unparalleled in skill and beauty and tell an intriguing tale of a time long past. Plan on a few hours at least to get a feel for the... More

All the monuments in this town are amazing. I'd recommend touring them by bike as it's an easy place to ride around.

When in the area it is definitely worth seeing these 7th Century temples and monuments carved right into the granite rock. Intricate carvings depicting Indian culture and religion which survive to this day will give you an insight into the depth of the Indian traditions. Afterwards you can have a meal at one of the many resorts nearby.

We saw these beautiful carvings - which compared to those on the shore temples are in better shape and depict stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. We didn't hire a guide - but feel that it's better to enjoy their visual appeal than to delve into the history - which at best is sketchy. Though the reasons for these may... More

Arjuna's Penance: Visit early in the day as it's blisteringly hot later on and although there is some shade, there is a lot of walking in open spaces. The sculptures and building remains are fascinating but you will need a good guide book or a human guide to interpret what you are looking at. Shore Temple: beautiful, small temple in... More

You can start viewing Arjuana's Penance on the carved boulders and circle around and above on the hillside to other cave temple with many different scenes carved inside, run across a troop of monkeys, circle back to Krisshna's butterball (I knew what to see, but was still surprised at the size of the rock) and continue around to more carved... One of those Wow! Moments when one has to remind themselves how old these monuments actually are. Situated on the outskirts of the village and easy to access and explore. Better to have a guide to appreciate the history and beauty of the site. A must-do if in the area.

I stayed in a hotel close to the shore temple which made it easy to walk to all these major sights. These monuments are situated within walking distance from one another. The terrain is easy to cover and pleasant to walk. The butterball of Krishna, a giant granite boulder, is a delight to see as one can position oneself in... More
