Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary, Now a Tiger Reserve is the one and only wildlife corridor in the North-Western region of Tamil Nadu. It has very good herbivore activity and bird life since it is adjoining with the Bandipur and Mudumalai National Parks. It is one of the major constituent to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve

Now, for the sightseeing, The major route is from Sathyamangalam (TN) to Chamrajnagar(KA) which is a National Highway(209). One can easily spot wildlife from Bannari Amman Temple to Thalavadi Road (After Hasanur), which is a stretch of about 35 kms. There are two Forest Department checkposts in this route, one near the Bannari Amman Temple and one at Haasanur.

The best time to spot wildlife is always between 3 PM to 6:30 PM in the evening. Believe me I have tried at all other times as well, But no luck. Most of the times, I have spotted more wildlife activity in this time only. With some luck, one can easily spot Elephants, Gaur, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Black Buck, Barking Deer, Wild Horses, Wild Boars, Common Langurs and Bonnet Macaques. If you are really lucky you get to see Leopards or Tigers. Apart from the mammals, If you are a birder, Its a heaven for you.

Going in Bike is a preferred choice because of the visibility. When you spot an animal, Please dont stop your vehicle near the animal, as the animal will get scared and it will run away. If you want to stop, Just stop the vehicle bit away from the animal and cut your engine off to stop making noise. Observe the animal without disturbing it and never feed or tease them.

We went on the safari organised by TN Forest Department from Karachikorai to Thengumarhad in a Midi bus. Children had a first hand experience of what a dry deciduous forest is. We spotted some spotted deer, and Sambar and the highlight was seeing some fresh tiger pug marks. Thengumarhad a remote village with the only access through the forest track was scenic with the River Moyar offering great photo opportunities. The time taken for the safari is 5 and a half hours. The ride is tedious and the jungle track is what it is very undulating. A shorter safari with more animal sightings will make this trip better.

Hasanur Sathyamangalam tiger safari is worst. Forest department is just looting money. The jeeps are fetched from local resorts with no guide. The drivers are old locals and can't speak other than Tamil. Don't expect much apart from roaming in a old 4x4 in jungle roads. If Tamilnadu Govt ans Forest Department want to do good for the locals they should think of reviving the forest safari which can attract tourists and help locals.

The rich diversity of fauna is evident from the following number of species for various categories: larger mammals-40 species, reptiles-30 species, avifauna-225 species, amphibians-15 species, butterflies-85 species and fishes-10 species. Being home to more than 850 Indian elephants with 6 Elephant corridors makes it part of the 7th elephant reserve (Nilgiri-Eastern Ghats Elephant Reserve) and the largest elephant habitat in India. Some of the other notable species include hyena, slender loris, wild boar, sloth bear, civet, jackal, otter, mongoose, blackbuck, barking deer, spotted deer, sambar, four horned antelope, mouse deer, Indian pangolin, porcupine, jungle cat, langur, bonnet macaque, leopard and gaur. Some of the rare birds include- white backed vulture, threatened gyps, woodpecker, brown fish owl etc.
