An awesome place to visit during your stay in Pelling region of Sikkim. As it was within a stone’s throw distance of our Elgin heritage resort , we visited this place twice during our trip in west Sikkim. A beautiful and tranquil place with its own charm. Mesmerising views of Himalayan mountain range could be seen from this monastery.

This is one of the must visit shrines in Pelling. Also one can have a delightful view of mountains Kanchenjunga peak from here. There are old statues of Buddha and gurus and a chariot inside. The buddhist students are inside and taking training.

Pemayangtse monastery is perhaps one of the best in country. The scenic beauty specially in the lap of nature is just awesome. Somebody can really experience the way of Buddhism here. The museum at top floor is also very good.

It felt quite similar to the monasteries we had already seen around Gangtok. I walked around it and exited. However, now that I read the reviews, I see people say some good things about the art work in there. But at that time I was just happy sitting on the stairs and soaking up the outside energy. The place is beautiful.

One can drive straight up to it. Not much walking involved. There are 3 stories with wall murals and intricate ornate large figures of Guru Padmasambhava which I guess is The Budhha. (The creaky wooden stairs to the third floor are steep and older people and small children will need help.) The paintings and some of the figures are sexually explicit. Somewhat like figures one sees in Konarak and Khajuraho. For some reason they have hung yellow cloths to cover some of these objectionable parts. But to me, they should just leave them alone. The murals have a lot of detail. Wish they could put summaries of what each section is about.

Visited the monastery during our visit to Pelling. Its a peaceful place. It has 2 floors and has a museum that displays some old stuff. Did not spend much of a time in here as I did not find it too attractive. One may employ a guide to understand the details of the monastery and its history. Overall an average attraction.

Oldest monastery in Sikkim, close to second capital and Pelling. Check out the artifacts from 17th century in second floor tiny museum.

Interesting place , surrounds not well kept. The monks all day chanting is mesmerising. And the wood carved paradise temple on the top floor is awe inspiring. No photography indoors
