" There is much comfort in the hills
and a great easing of the heart."
My sightseeing legs were getting restless…my cousins and I followed our instincts and were off to Sikkim, the land of the mountains. After a tiring journey we landed in Gantok. Nestled in the Himalayas, Sikkim is hilly, rocky with precipitous slopes where landslides are frequent making transportation perilous.
On our way to Lachung which is a seven-hour rough ride we are faced with a roadblock. We had to wait another forty-five minutes for the army to carpet the stretch which had given way. Lachung which borders Tibet is an army base. After a well rested night, the next morning from our hotel window, we had the most spectacular view... a pyramid of gleaming white mountains. There is something magnificent about the mountains, yet so gentle as if they are your friend. Driving on to zero point through carpets of red flowers, forests of pine and silver fern and endless hills the place is compelling. A deep stream, the Teesta river snakes along the road bed. We also encounter a herdsman with his herd of yaks.
Our next destination is Natula. At the checkpoint confirming our identities and stamping our permits we are allowed to proceed. We are lucky as on the previous days the pass was closed for tourists due to bad weather. Located on the old silk route at an elevation of more than 14000 ft Nathula is embraced by snowcapped mountains and waterfalls. Walking on ice we reach the border where we have an aha aha moment… shaking hands with the javaans. On oue way back we spend some quiet moments sitting on the foothills. Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would have the mountains to myself…. where you reach a spiritual epiphany.
We notice the presence of Gurudwaras in many places all over Sikkim. We pay our respects in one of them & pray for peace with our neighbours.
In Gantok a visit to the monastery is an eye opener. Little boys dressed in monk robes are playing football. A gong sounded & suddenly a flutter of activity…. shoes lining up along the entrance, the boy monks taking their places inside… then the chanting of the sutras & sweet incense seeping through making the place holy.
It's fun to travel with a girl group. We did different head gears from the Sikkimese, the African to the Himachal and also the Indian towel wrap.
Flags can be seen everywhere in Sikkim On asking we find out that these are prayer flags which have prayers inscribed on them. These flags are an integral part of the landscape of Sikkim.
The hotels where we stayed provided us with fabulous meals of our choices ( the three of us being vegetarians). No sooner had we expressed our desire to try out the local food and beer than our table was laden with Dansberg Blue from Danny Denzongpa's beer co, a plateful of momos and traditional Sikkimese fare. At the hotel in Lachung we interacted with a meditation group from Thailand , with their religious llama giving us his blessings. We feel truly blessed! The day we were leaving, the manager of the hotel presented us with a Sikkimese scarf 'Kada' for a safe journey.
Sikkim is a journey that leaves you mesmerised… across waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, fields of rhododendrons… but most of all it is the people.

Nothing out of World. You can skip. There are other very good monestries in Sikkim like Rumtek and Ranka.
The scenic beauty is very good. It was closed when I visited so I just had a photo session here. It was even difficult for me to stay here for long because of high speed wind.
You can skip the place if you are short of time.

There are 2 Gompas (monasteries) in Lachung. The bigger Gompa is better known to tourists and tourist vehicle drivers. But there is also a smaller gompa at Singrik, the entry point of Lachung. It is accessed by climbing a stairway near a small bridge, right after the first cluster of hotels at Lachung.
Once you climb the stairs you come across some houses and a small patch of maize farm, from where you can see the grand peaks opposite.
The monastery is closed most of the time, the monks gathering only at prayer time. In Lachung the monks stay at home, and attend the gompa during prayer and ritual.
The gompa has 4 chortens surrounding the main building, which is small. Behind the Gompa the mountains of Lachung rise steeply, with their prayer flags fluttering. If you are exploring the small town, and have time, it's a nice place to visit for the quietness and view.

We spent some time birding in the thickets that surround the monastery (called a Gumpa locally) and it was a very productive session. We got the Sikkim Treecreeper and Maroon-backed Accentor there. Very nice thick jungle. The Gumpa itself is very typical of the N.Sikkim area with cool frescoes and carved woodwork. Well worth an afternoon visit

“We are planning to visit Lachen/Lachung/Yumthang during 21th to 28th July of this year. As normally this is a monsoon period in India, i would like to know the weather in that location. Is it will be good for travel this Location?
Kindly advise. Thanks

It is not advised to visit during that time as intermittent rains will spoil movement further and also fear of landslides. We have faced that in June 2017.

Pls don't go there. The area is badly disturbed. Also, unless you're a die hard fan of hills and ready to cope up with long hours of travel through risky roads. If you've kids and any elderly citizen, then definitely avoid.
