These ruins go back a 1000 years and are traced to the Kachari rulers who ruled this part of the north eastern hills of Assam. They are located in the heart of Dimapur town. But the town’s roads are so bad that reaching them is a most painful and disheartening experience.
These mushroom shaped sand stone monoliths are carved with geometric patterns, although some of the nearby toppled-over stones show motifs of animals and plants. No one is quite certain what purpose these strange monoliths served, but the popular belief is that they are meant to commemorate victories in battles.
The site is unkempt, the ruins are almost hidden in tall grasses, and there are no signs explaining their history. The monoliths stand grandly mysterious, almost as though they were planted by some alien race. I wasn’t disappointed.

The Kachari Ruins, the set of ruins in Dimapur, Nagaland, dates back its existence to 10th century and today stands as an epitome of historical tourism in the state. The ruins are a series of mushroom domed pillars created by the Kachari Kingdom. Though the pillars have lost most of their glory because of gradual crumbling, yet those who wish to explore the past era of Nagaland still find a reason to pay a visit. The history of the place dates back to the 10th century when they appeared during the Kachari civilization. The pillars were constructed by the Kachari kingdom which ruled here for a long period of time.

The Dimasa is like a bedtime fairytale story that existed in history. It would definitely leave u in awe n make u wonder if the ancient Dimasa King was a giant who played a giant chess game or did he have super powers to be able to throw a chess from one place to another...
..n yeah!
.. u'd obvious ponder ur thoughts more if u watch ancient aliens on history channel😀

While in Nagaland I wanted to see these ruins. It required an effort to be there as Dimapur is notorious for traffic jams and people missing their flights. This week I was in Kohima and on way back I decided to see these ruins. As traffic is unpredictable I got barely a few minutes at the ruins and I could admire the structures built about a thousand years back by Kacharis before they were overwhelmed by Thai Ahoms who later on ruled Assam till arrivals of the British.
Remains are grand and one can imagine the effort which must have gone at that time to carve huge stone monoliths. Today it is an example of neglect. There is no notice board having description of the place. There was no guard. We had to get in the place somehow. I admired the beauty of the carvings on the stone. Decided to come back someday when I am not threatened by traffic and possibility of missing the flight.
There are references of Dimasa kingdom who created these structures going back to Mahabharat times and Hidimba being from here. There is no authentic record of that.

There is not much to see here. It is really in ruins as the it is not maintained by the Govt. or any Society. Its best to go there during the noon or the early hour of the evening. A great historical site which has been ruined due to neglect.

The only attraction of Dimapur. The park contains many sculpted stones of the medieval Kachari kingdom of Assam. Since their origin and purpose is unknown, many locals believe that these were life size pawns which were used by Kachari kings to play chess.

The ruins are sort of interesting - probably not worth a separate stop-over because there is absolutely no information on their origin. Good to speculate on Dr Who origins and this is as believable as local explanations.
