This is one of the oldest dam in Maharashtra. One has to take a permit to visit the actual dam site. The dam has a garden which is freely accessible and provides a good view of the backwaters of the dam. The garden is well maintained and provides excellent photo opportunities.

Koyna dam is a very important eco-system providing life to the nearby surrounding for human beings, wild animals, birds, flora and fauna. The large water body of backwaters areas extents to many kilometres and the dam is one of the most iconic one with great technology to ensure safety of the area and scientific use of water resources for cultivation as well as for generating power which is being sold to nearby State. The dam can be accessed through Nehru Garden but due to pandemic, they do not allow visit very close to the water body. You need specific permission to go near the dam for security reasons. The place is surrounded by great green cover with lot of birds around. You will continuously hear the sound of chirping of various birds. The area has also good reptile habitat. We had a chance to see one reptile being rescued by an reptile expert of the area - Mr. Nikhil Mohite (+919765078771). The large reptile was stuck in the lift and Mr. Mohite went to rescue it with great care. He is an expert in reptiles and during the pandemic, the low level of pollution brought out many reptiles to human habitat and Mr,. Mohite is the only solution in the area to rescue them and leave them back in their original habitat. Our extremely reliable birding experts (these guys are real birding passionate and I salute their skills and patience for their determination to protect the environment) of the area Mr. Sagar (+919623461080) and Mr. Kshitij Kamble (+918275360230) are the best bet to help you in your Birding trips which will take a couple of days or more to explore various forests. They can take you even to a forest (very dense and you must do the trek to reach the old Shiva temple with them) about 15km away from Koyna (DhankaL area) where birds are plenty. You can see not only Hornbills (Malabar / great Asian / pied but the beautiful flycatcher). Koyna Dam visit has real great offering to naturalists and wild life and serenity lovers. Really enjoyed the place.

Koyna dam is a completely non commercial weekend get away from Pune. No part of the place has been exploited commercially. The dam view from the top of the mountains is a sight to behold. The water falls are awesome because it rains all through the year. Definitely a better place to visit than its neighbours mahabaleshwar and matheran. It has Agreen resorts (3 different types of resorts for low, mid and high range pockets) as well as MTDC.

Koyna is truly the best kept secret of Maharashtra. It is a haven of surreal views and vivid
hues. It does not share the same popularity as Lonavala or Matheran or other weekend
getaways from Mumbai and Pune but still has a lot to offer. Try something unique this weekend and head to this patch of green paradise!

There are 2 options. 1. In Koyna approach local goverment office and they give you permission to visit dam from outside. This has to be done 1 day prior to your visit. Documentary proof of your address and photo id and 2 photos are required.
2. In Pune you can seek permission from Sinchan bhavan. Not sure the procedure but visit this office and seek permission for the day of visit.
How is current weather in Koyna dam & near by areas. Is it raining there or hot weather like remaining part of maharashtra. Planing to go on next weekend.
