amazing efforts to keep at least some of the ethnic treasures alive. our guide invited two Zhuang Minority women into our pension for a chat and demonstration of their extravagant hair traditions - a cute little private festival :)

This is a traditional village in the Guangxi mountain that is preserved for tourism. They even build new houses with modern material and cover them with wood. There is a daily show of local culture but it was only once a day in the winter. You see local women selling various trinkets. They are famous for their very long hair but it was too cold to show us. Not bad for a quick stop. There is the rickety wood bridge across the river to get to the village

This was a super cool experience. I read about the Zhuang Minority Village and the women who only cut their hair twice in a lifetime. Their traditions are still very much alive and their hair style speaks to whether or not they are married, single, have children etc. We drove several hours from Yangshuo and the last part of the drive was up twisty curvy roads high up on the mountains. It felt very isolated. We stopped at the village on the way to Ping'an. Our driver brought us to a large ticket area where we had him purchase the show tickets. We walked on a little bridge across a big river to get to the Zhuang village. There was plenty of seating in a large wooden building and seating was first come first serve. Seating is on two levels. The show lasted about one hour. The traditional clothing was beautiful and there were as many as 30-40 woman dancing. The music and setting was exactly what I hoped for. I felt so privileged to witness this event. Even though this is a staged show for tourists, it is still a fantastic way to get immersed in their culture and enjoy their traditions. They do a Zhuang wedding ceremony where they pick men from the audience to marry the women in a little mock ceremony. To choose your bride the man must go to the group of women and step on the toes of the one he is choosing. Once the men have chosen a bride, the man must perform some traditional dances. Later the Zhuang women pinch the behind of their chosen mate to show affection. It's funny to see the men jump in surprise at this practice. My husband was one of the men who had the honor of marrying a Zhuang woman. As a keepsake my husband was given an embroidered marital shoulder bag. After the show I joined the women in a dance and then we continued out drive up the mountains to Ping'an where we stayed two nights

I went there with my wife during the mid autumn festival on a private tour. Our guide was Cindy from the Shangri La hotel travel service and she was a great host.

The village is about 2.5 hours by car but you get to stop and use the toilets etc. The reason why we went there was because of the Longji terraced rice fields. The view was spectacular and reminded me of when I was small in Hong Kong when my grand parents and mother used to grow rice and all sorts.

You also get to visit a hundred year house which though seem basic, it breathed history, warmth and peace inside. The lady owner is the only person living there and she is friendly. You need to tip her for viewing the place; about 10-20 Yuans.

The villagers are really friendly and you hear them shout at each other like it is fun! They are hospital and won't force you to buy things you don't want. I bought a large bag of chillies for 10 yuan with no hassle.

I would give a weeks time to stay there and help them cut the rice fields just to be with nature, history and beauty.

It's a must visit for anyone visiting Guilin!

They are ready to perform a nice show whenever there are 30 people to watch. every hour of the day. They say they are on a whatsup group, and when the manager decides to make a performence she calls all the other girls (about 20). and they, at the moment leaves every thing and come to make the show. Highly recomended.

Fascinating, walking up the hill to the Villiage watching the community tend their rice terraces, make tofu and sell their wares. The old Villiage is just that, and it's charm is tangible. We ate lunch in a local cafe, delicious fresh food, can't vouch for the hygiene.

Highly recommended to stop here on the way to Dao Zhai rice terrace. Have cultural performance & village folks selling souvenirs. Need to bargaiin to get good price, about half of original price. River is very clear. Overall very relaxing experience.

Amazing quaint village along the river. The "long hair women" will show how they fold their hair on top of their heads, really fascinating. Lunch at a local restaurant an experience, not so good and not very hygienic.
