We walked here when visiting the rice terraces. Very interesting to wander around and get a feel for life here. Lots of photo opportunities. Some places are looking very closed but some are open and welcoming. We had a drink in a cafe with a great view and the people were very friendly.

The Ping'an village is only accessible by a in house local tour bus that circle up the mountains. It is a must visit as many Chinese indigenous villages has been homogenised and commercialised due to tourism. However this is a rare village that is still at most 20% commercialised. The local Zhuang minorities are still living their lifestyles with little interests in reaping tourist money. The few restaurants are still served by locals using traditional cooking methods like charcoal outside their house. One must have dish is the bamboo rice (rice stuffed inside bamboo before being heated using charcoal). The whole village is also underdeveloped: buildings are old and deserted as younger villagers have moved to the city area for work. The pathways are uneven and steep at some points (so some fitnesses is needed due to the walking). Toilets are dirty. But this is perhaps the few cons we bear with before its gets commercialised. My feeling is this area will look very different in 10 years time once the lure of tourist money spur development. So a must visit if you are in Guilin before it gets commercialised.

Planning to hike/walk from Ping'an Village to Longji, we drove up here from Guilin and the scenery and sites got better and better as we drew closer and closer to our starting point in Ping'an, starting with the winding river on the valley floor to the serpentine road rising up to the hilly village. There was so much of interest to see that it was hard to concentrate on the sometimes stony pathway. There are many walking paths, steps, etc. in and around Ping'an to choose from, all lined with food stalls, chickens, ducks rinsing off in rivulets of mountain water, souvenir sellers, local folks in traditional clothing, the ubiquitous and golden rice terraces being readied for harvesting and that go on and on, ancestors' hillside headstones being taken over by weeds, Zhuang and Yao vendors hawking their wares (some handcrafted, some generic), folks selling rice dishes stuffed into the hollows of grilled, smoking hot bamboo poles, women in their uniquely Zhuang colorful hats carrying woven baskets on their backs, a brand-spanking new wooden viewing pagoda at the highest point (and thus, a gorgeous view of the rolling hills and valleys below), women with their sturdy ponies schlepping food and more from place to place, open fires roasting sweet potatoes and eggs, and, at the Longji end, the adorable and rustic wooden cut-out figures that tell the story of the unchanging Zhuang life, multi-storied, cheek-by-jowl, ancient wooden homes and a wonderful, wonderful meal at the Guzhuang Renjia Restaurant (AKA Ancient Longji Zhuang Peoples' restaurant...am hoping to find a way to review this no-address restaurant on TA). The hike is not hard, there is SO much to see, so much color, so many interesting people who you pass by; make sure to go up every set of steps so you can experience every sight, every valley view, eat a good, local meal, support the Zhuang and Yao minority peoples' lives and you will gain as much as you give (and feel oh, so tired and happy by the end)

This old rice growing area is a UNESCO heritage site. Rice lattisce fields carved into the hillside. A lot of walking, but great scenery. We went a week before the rice harvest. They even shot off fireworks to celebrate the good harvesting time.

You'll need strong legs to explore Ping'an, especially if you have hiked in across 10 km of rice paddies

Delightful place but getting overcrowded with guesthouses

On arrival by bus at Dazhai, we booked the return cable car to see the third viewpoint. After that, we hike up from Dazhai to stay a night at Tian Tou Zhai. We hike to the other two view points in Tian Tou Zhai. The next morning, we hike from Tian Tou Zhai to Ping An village which took us about 3.45 hours. Ping An Village is more compact and more commercialised. We arrived at the viewpoint, Nine Dragons and Five Tigers. From there we walked through Ping An village down to the bus station to catch the 1 pm bus back to Guilin. There are two other timings at 3 and 5 pm in the afternoon. We only packed a change of clothing after leaving our luggages in Guilin. We had a superb hiking experience with the cool weather in the morning. Our Rice View Villa hotel provided an excellent picture guide which is very easy to follow for the hike.

One the "supporting" activity for visitors to the Longji Rice Terraces. This is the only place for a stayover for photographers looking to shoot sunrise and sunset pics of the valley and of course, for local cityfolk looking for a village life relax getaway.
Good for at least for a night stay and take of the porter fee should you need help by the hardworking porter (RMB20-70/piece/way). Its hard work to lug luggage up the hill...
Enjoy and have a chill-out at the village.
