Last tourist stop in Bulgaria October 07
After a long drive from Sofia to get to our Danube River cruise, this was our last tourist stop. A couple pictures of the fort walking to it from the street and from the river side are attached. There were nice views from the top (two pictures from the top are attached)

    Baba Vida Fortress
Free time this morning on our River Cruise. Lovely to walk along the river, admiring the buildings, war memorial and finally the Fortress. We actually visited the fortress twice as we came back on a guided tour later in the day.

    Fortress Fun Time
The Fortress was very beautiful and easy to explore, if you love wandering around in a place full of history then this is the place for you. Be prepared to have cash on you, preferably Bulgarian leva. The view from up here is stunning, you can see both the city and the Danube from above during your exploration here!

    Interesting piece of history
We had less than 30 minutes to walk around this fort and still managed to see most of it even though we could not take the time to enjoy some of the uniform and other exhibits on the first floor. It is in remarkable condition despite its age. There were several staircases that were a bit challenging due to their steepness, worn stone steps or dim lighting.

    A Historical Fortress !!
During our river cruise , we came here in a guided tour. It is located on the banks of Danube river and it's one of the most important attraction in Vidin. It has got a very long history behind it. It was opened to the public in 1958. it is the only preserved old fortress in Bulgaria. Now days it has got a museum where medieval arms and dresses are kept which are worth seeing. The only problem inside was steep staircases and cobble pathways. It was quite difficult to walk on them.

Vidin is a small Bulgarian village that does not have many incentives.
Probably one of the most outstanding is the fortress of Baba Vida. If you've reached the village, you have to visit it.
The state of preservation is good, but does not really offer much beyond its exterior image of fortress, since the interior is quite diaphanous.
It’s fine, without more, but it’s not worth getting here just to see it, although if you’ve arrived you should not miss it.

The fortress was a short walk along the Danube from our ship. It is not particularly big and had close to no artifacts whatsoever. It is cheap to enter but they only take Bulgarian currency. It was interesting to a point but not a "wow" visit.

This is supposedly the only entirely preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria. As others have noted, you must have Bulgarian currency to enter. Regardless, nice to walk around the outside; located right on the Danube river and within easy walking distance of the cruise ship dock.

- Location: On the bank of the Danube.
- Access: It’s not easy to find the fort because of the signage and directions were non-existent. I fell upon it more by luck than judgement.
- View: The top level provides panoramic views of the area and new cable-stayed Calafat bridge. I sat on the front lawn and watched few men swimming in the Danube.
- Fortress condition: The walls are massive and well preserved.
- Duration of visit: An hour.

Baba Vida is gracefully situated on the bench of the Danube river. It is surprisingly well preserved (or better to say, reconstructed), with a few installations in some of the first "cells" following the entrance. It has a spectacular view over the river and with its summer theater represents a great place for events - weddings for example. In my view it is much nicer than Tzarevetz.

Located on the River Danube and Border between Bulgaria and Romania, very easy to find in the city of Vidin.
Parking is free in front. You have a vending machines all over the city, and souvenir shop at the ticket office.
Entrance is 7 BGN (3.5 EUR) for 1 person.
You can explore and climb through narrow hallways and steps to the top. View is amazing. But it can be very slippery surface if it is raining or humid.
We recommend!
