First day we we walked down to here and a guy asked us if we wanted a boat ride. We negotiated the price. So we set out. He was telling us about different things with a moderate comprehension of English. He pulled the boat into an area with cremations and the hospice and another guy hopped on and started telling us about the cremations. I was clued on straight away what this was all about. He then went into how much wood cost and families couldn't afford it. He then extended his hand and asked us to cough up money for a cremation. My partner gave him 500 rupees but of course this wasn't enough and started to put guilt on us. He looked at me and asked me to give money. I said I didn't have any. He told me to give money so I have good karma, which made me think 1. I'm not Hindu so it was neither here nor there for me and 2. what about his karma with him preying on people's guilt and being manipulative. I said no and asked for the boatman to please take off. If the boat pulls into a cremation area and another guy gets on I would firmly say 'No' or 'I don't have any money' straight away. I'm sure that the money goes straight into their pocket and the hospice sees none of it. If you make it known that you aren't giving them money and that you know it's a scam they will leave you alone.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is located on the banks of River Narmada. The site is of immense historical importance.
People hold the ghat in high esteem because of the legend associated with it. This is the place where King Mahabali performed ten ashwamedha sacrifices. It’s believed that this is exactly same place where Lord Vishnu reincarnated himself as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and had measured the entire universe in just three steps.
There are many old temples constructed on this ghat which includes Ambaji Mata Temple, Umiya Mata Temple, Narmada Mata Temple, Kotirudreshwar Mahadev, Vamana Temple and many others. One must not forget to visit this ghat at early morning hours to enjoy the spiritual peace of this place. The entire region wears a festive look during poornima days.

i understand that it is one of the oldest cities, and this ghat especially, is one of the holiest places where millions of pilgrims come every year. But there should be some system in place by now where the crowd can be managed. The road leading to this ghat is wide, but there's no system of direction here.
The ghat steps are very unsafe and slippery, yet people are allowed to stand on the steps and throng. The local authorities should enforce some way to make people stay safe and enjoy responsibly, especially during the evening prayers.
Sadly, didn't find peace there.

The ghats are a great and fascinating riverside walk, and for the western traveller let you experience absolute classic the sights, sounds and yes - the smells of India in a couple of miles with no real hassle or pestering. But if you only have time or money for one thing whilst you are there make sure it is the aarti ceremony at sunset.
If you are not Hindu and not taking part in the ceremony be sure to remain respectful and unobtrusive because this is not a tourist spectacle but a sincere and prayerful act of worship for more than 90% of the people there. However, it really is a spectacle: a vibrant, awe-inspiring feast for the eyes and ears.

Everyone should check out the evening ganga arti when in varanasi!
It's a beautiful experience...very peaceful and uplifting.
It starts around 6 30 but get there early to reserve the good seats. You can watch it from the boats too, so you can watch all the artis happen simultaneously. It's a bit of a walk from the car parking so be prepared. Or you can rent a motor bike all the way up to the ghat.
The crowd chants the arti together which creates a beautiful atmosphere.

Went for an evening arti but not a place to stand or see anything.
Getting to the ghat was a challenge too as police tend to block the roads off and need to take electric riskshaw or bicycle rickshaws. Traffic is horrendous. The area should really be pedestrianised.
We found that the people have closed off the areas where the artis are performed to make money. We paid about Rs150 to be taken to someone's rooftop/balcony. Be prepared for a long sit down, it does take a long time.
Was a moral decision to give into these commercial pandits or miss out on the experience, the later won.

The image depicted by Tripadvisor seems to be that of the ghat at Varanasi. In Bharuch, the ghat is far quieter, with temples dotting the area.
