Karakul Lake is a beautiful destination.
BUT! The "lead photo" shown on Tripadvisor (photo uploaded by the Australian "Karmaexplorer" in 2017 is *NOT* Karakul Lake! I don't know if "Karmaexplorer" labeled it as "Karakul Lake" when it was submitted it to Tripadvisor, or whether this was a photo management error within Tripadvisor. The very picturesque body of water shown in Karmaexplorer's photo is actually 琼块勒巴什 (variously rendered as "Qiongkuai Lebash", "Qiongkaui Lebashi", or "Qiongkuai Lebashen") On the internet you may sometimes see it informally called "Baisha Lake" (literally "White sand lake". But that name is a bit confusing since it is commonly applied to a lake in Henan province.
Like the real "Karakul Lake" in Xinjiang , Qiongkuai Lebash is also along the Karakoram Highway. Stop and take photos, but then continue on the road to the true Karakul Lake! (to add more confusion, there is also a "Karakul Lake" in Tajikistan)
Note: if you are a user of Google Maps, the "map view" of QiongKuai Lebash is quite misleading. But if you switch to the satellite view it becomes quite visible.

Also note that the Tripadvisor form did not allow me to enter the date I was actually at Karakul Lake (July 2017)

Lake karakul is a few hours from Kashgar on China-Pakistan highway. Recommend organizing before your trip as you need a permit to visit this area (Chinese and foreigners). My guide, Sadik, helped with the permit beforehand and we went briefly in person upon arrival to finalize it. There were a few checks along way but all were easy. Worth the amazing views. Even with overcast day, it was still beautiful. Bring a light coat as it’s chilly at highest altitude.

Magical high-altitude lake. Karakul Lake is 3,600 meters above sea level. One of my photos includes Muztag Peak, which is shaped like a white-haired old man lying there (in the reflection off the water).

Karakul Lake is located about 190km from Kashgar, Xinjiang. At a height of about 3,600 meters, Karakul Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world. The reflection of the snow-capped mountains, on its blue water is a amazingly beautiful scene. The construction and partially finished China-Pakistan Freindship Highway makes the visit to Karakul Lake much easier now. Although the journey would take more than 4 hours by car but it is worth a visit.

Maybe it was because we saw Bulungou Marsh Lakes (White Sands Dunes Lake) first on the way to here, but our stop here did not have us taking a lot of pics at all. The view and size of the lake really seem to pale compared to Bulungou but if you're going on KKH on the way to Tashkorgan, you can stop by for a stretch break from the drive.

What can you say. It's a beautiful lake ina beautiful area as is most of the scenery along the highway. If you stop by the bit with the shops the lake is actually fenced off so it's worth stopping elsewhere. Also avoid the toilets there. Trust me! All toilets along the highway were awful! Just hold on until Tashkorgan!

Not sure why people like this place so much. It is a small and dirty pond surrounded by dry and dusty land. Hours of road just to take a picture and drive back: makes no sense to me. There are way nicer mountain lakes in nearby Pakistan or Tibet.

Karakul lake, located about 190km from Kashgar is the second lake on the way to Tashkurgan after Bulunkou lake which was the real highlight for us. The snow-capped giant Muzthag Ata (chinese Mushitage Feng) with it’s 7546masl (or 7509masl?) behind the Karakul lake offers stunning views. Hopefully there is no wind so this beautiful picture will be reflected within the lake. There is an official view point where they ask for an entrance fee (maybe 50rmb?). Our driver brought us a bit more to the south of the lake where views are also very good and free.
Btw: right now in October, foreigners don’t need a permit to travel the road to Tashkurgan. But this may be subject to changes. There were also several security check points which worked well.
Overall, highly recommended trip with an overnight stay in Tashkurgan if possible. The good hostels in Kashi help to organize a driver.
