Adjacent to the larger shopping centre, there was a lady in the front room at her desk where you pay as you go in who was gave us a friendly hello but otherwise left us to wander about the various interconnecting rooms looking at the various arts and crafts on display. As you go in the door there’s various tourist information brochures on the surrounding area. I bought a wooden handcrafted key ring, the prices aren’t bad and there was a lot of variety. I also like to buy local goods if possible when I’m travelling through WA towns and we had never been and actually stopped at Australind before, we spent about half an hour or so here, had the place to ourselves, it was nice little break before having lunch.

The Heritage Listed Henton Cottage was formerly known as the “Prince of Wales Hotel” where travellers along the Coast Road could rest from their journey and was built for William Dacres Williams in 1841. It was later purchased by John Allnutt who renamed the property "Henton", and together with his wife Sarah, established a home and merchant business. He lived in the cottage until his death in 1851. Various families owned the property between 1851 and 1976 when Phil and Holly Nutley restored the cottage to its original condition. Henton Cottage is now used as an antique and giftware business and also incorporates the local Tourist Bureau.

The building is of hand-sawn timber-frame, jarrah weatherboard construction with a wooden shingle hip roof and a verandah on two sides supported on full height timber posts with a lean-to extension at the rear. The original building consisted of three rooms and a hallway which was built from pre-fabricated construction sent form England; these rooms were refurbished in an authentic manner by the Nutleys. The Cottage has timber casement windows and French doors opening to the verandah and features a brick oven fireplace, heavy jarrah doors with hand-made hinges and doorframes made of pit sawn timer utilising hand-made nails.

I have no problems with commercial interests being harnessed to assist maintain and financially support historical buildings, but, do we need the plethora of signage surrounding the building with only one small sign mentioning that the building is "Henton Cottage".

Send impatient family away to have lunch so that you can browse and enjoy the interesting antiques plus memorabilia and crafts. Helpful staff, good prices and there is always a little something for a gift or to add to your own collection at home.

Great little stop away from the business of the Australind shops with a wonderful selection of antiques on display and for purchase - cash only the last I visited. Front room also houses visitor information
