The Caves at Vallorbe (Canton de Vaud) in the Swiss Jura were opened to the public a quarter of a century ago. They afford a spectacular display of the beauty of natural rock, enhanced entirely by natural illumination.

For millions of years the limestone layers were eroded by the Orbe, a river which runs underground before bursting from the rocks – seemingly as a natural spring of which the Vallorbe Caves are the faithful guardians.

Inside these caves, which are among the most beautiful in Europe, there is a display – the “Fairies’ Treasure” in which more than 250 mineral samples from all over the World are exhibited in four domed rooms hewn from the natural rock.

I came here recently with my wife, my mom, and her friend. The caves are about a 35 minute drive from Lausanne and well worth it. The walk is about 1.3 miles total and the cave has all sorts of stalagmites and stalactites, one looks like a T-Rex. The payoff is near the end when you walk up about 100... More

Magical underworld Wonderful grotto, varied with various stalagnit, treble paths, partly with light plays and music. Particular highlight in the cathedral .... Worth the trip for the whole family

The grottes de Vallorbe are definitely worth a visit. We spent one and a half hours here. Very well laid out and the lighting is excellent. The Source of the Orbe river is here and the river is truly beautiful.

The area is nice so you would like the trip to get there. The cavas are amazing, I've seen several ones but what surprised me the most was the river inside you could actually see the source. It's a little bit humid inside so a waterproof jacket would be nice.

We went from Geneva which took us a good hours drive. At place, we were amazed by the visit to the caves and how well done it was organized. It took us an hour to walk around the cave, more than we expected, but it never felt boring or to long, not even for our 3 year old daughter. Also,... More

I've seen quite a few caves, and this one is definitely among the best. Nicely guided and nicely lit. Both the thundering river and end-cathedral are impressive features that make these caves special. The extensive rock collection at the end is beautiful.

I think every one must be in this palace minimum 1 time in his/her life. Great location. Cold water combined cold walls and amazing nature.

Only a 5-7 minute riverside walk from the car park, the grotto is a very enjoyable attraction. Jerseys needed as it´s 10c inside. Plenty of stairs to climb but all walkways very smooth. Awsome to hear and see the underground river. The small shop at the entrance does do teas/coffees

If you like this sort of thing it is just amazing. We have seen a few caves 'Grottes' in Switzerland this holiday and this was by far the most spectacular. The grandeur and size of the cathedral cave was beyond words. It was a challenge to find as both google maps and our sat nav did not agree on the... More
