Eurailpass holders travel for free, and it's easy to connect from the Rothorn (steam mountain) railway at Brienz. One can also visit Iseltwald (as we did) - apparently it's famous due to some South Korean series that meant nothing to me. Staff were unobtrusive with the ferry mostly on time throughout the journey. In late October, there was no crowding, although all the dining area was occupied with rich Europeans. The lake is attractive: not quite as stunning as say Sydney Harbour, but not pedestrian either.Visited October 2022Written 20 December 2022
- Naomi HNeedham Market, United Kingdom22 contributionsStunning day tripStunning day out. Beautiful lake - great for swimming and paddleboarding. From Interlaken you can take a lake cruise or a train to Lake Brienz. We took the cruise there and the train back. We found the cruise really packed and there is no queuing system so it's just a bundle to try to get a good seat when the boat arrives. It's a slow journey but there are some wonderful views on it. You can get off along the route to visit Geissbach Falls but then you would have an hour until the next boat so we didn't. We got the train back to Interlaken which was much quicker but you miss out on the scenery. We found a great place for swimming and paddleboarding called Strandbad. It was very basic and the English was limited but it was lovely and quiet. There were changing rooms, toilets, a cafe, an outdoor shower and sunbathing lawns. You could hire paddleboards by the hour too. It was about a 10 minute walk from the train station but absolutely worth it. 5 Franc entrance fee.Visited August 2022Written 25 March 2023
- Snowball's adventureBarnet, United Kingdom6,840 contributionsBeautiful, especially at IseltwaldAfter we took the cruise trip to explore the Lake Thun, we came to Interlaken OST(see) to cruise over the Lake Brienz! We had Swiss Travel Passes so the fares were included within our Passes. Again, we had the privilege to sit upstairs which was a lot quiet and comfortable than sitting downstairs. It was quite empty so we managed to move around to the best seats to snap the best pictures alone the shores. The scenery was picturesque, although I have to say Lake Brienz is not as breathtaking as Lake Thun & the trip was relatively short (1 hr 13 mins), but it was still a 5 stars experience! The only downside was that I was punched by a German speaking guy on my chest unexpectedly, when I said yes to his friends to take a picture for the group of them on the ship. Don't really know why, (obviously he didn't like me) Fortunately it didn't ruin my day. Still, a 5-stars cruise which I will highly recommend it to everyone. p.s. This is not cheap, even with half price ticket, so do choose a good day. Some vessels call at different locations so check timetables if not going to Brienz. - afinetravelerWashington DC, District of Columbia957 contributionsgreat way to spend a dayWe took a round trip boat ride from Interlaken to Brienz, and then back again to Interlaken. The lake is beautiful, and it’s a peaceful journey in both directions. The boat stopped at several places along the way, and there were hiking trails, train rides, restaurants and waterfalls to enjoy. But we just stayed on the boat, and had lunch in Brienz. The water is remarkably clean, and a stunning turquoise blue. It’s a great way to spend a relaxing day in Interlaken.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 July 2023

There are some special places within this ride like seeing the Giessbach waterfalls fall into the lake or like looking at the Giessbach hotel and the rail track as the boat moves away from Giessbach. Such a calm and serene ride.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 July 2023

Brienz is a small town on Lake Brienz. It is extremely picturesque and worth the stop. The town is also known for its woodcarvings.

If you only had time for one activity, which would you choose - Aare Gorge or Geissbach falls? They are both calling to me but we have to be in Zurich that evening and have limited time. Thanks!

I have a group of 33 taking the Brienz boat 64 midday to Interjaken OST in mid August. There is a 12 min connection time for next train trip to Lauterbrunnen. I’m thinking this is not enough time inbetween to get from the boat to the correct platform for our journey -especially since I’m not familiar with Interkaken station. Any advice? Thank you. And yes I know I can wait for the next train 😀

Thanks

We paid ch27 each. The lady in the pay booth was really helpful. I asked for a ticket that was more expensive but she told me the cheaper option.
It’s beautiful.

Hi,
My husband and I will be in Switzerland early Sept and staying Luaterbrunnen. We are going to Pilatus for one day and was hoping to catch the train back to Brienz 17.33pm and board the boat to return to Interlarken Ost. Is this possible and what website would be best to search times and prices. Would we be able also do stop offs at villages along the way ?
Regards

Check the timetable with either BLS or SBB - both have really useful apps - not sure how late the boats operate. The boats do stop along the way but only to drop off and pick up passengers. You’d have to wait for the next boat. Check out Giessbach falls if you can and the hotel for lunch.
Where to get on the cruise of lake and where to park the car? The timetable of the cruise and the fare?
