A nice little village, but one that would be anonymous. A very intelligent choice for a modern monument…
The idea of the fountain works with 6 types of beer and a glass washer... you buy a designer mug and buy the drinks you pour yourself.
Everything nice, clean and usable…
Really congratulations!
PS: all products from local craft breweries!

Was a nice finish after visiting Celje on the way back to the campsite. It's in a quiet park. You buy a beer mug on site after which you can taste your local beers. They also give background information about the beer and hops that grow everywhere in this valley on signs.

Self – service beer as it was years ago. There is nothing new – similar beer and high prices. Žalec has nice place for thirsty (first time) visitors and nothing more. We expected something new, maybe drinking corner with soft drinks for children and drivers. It is time to add something.

Good idea, nice beer but there is not hygiene at all because some people don’t wash their glasses and instead just go from one beer fountain to another, this way you can get some diseases. If the fountain could read from the bottom of the glass instead of getting the stick going inside of the glass, that would be more hygienic.

There is not much going on in Zalec. So when you et up a beer fountain, you are bound to attract some people from the neighborhood and some tourist. The idea is very simpel. You buy your own glass for 8 euro and can taste 6 different beers in 4 hours. You can rinse your glass before trying a new beer. There is always a nice person around to help you out. Deck chairs are available to sit around the park. Sometimes some live music is availble as well.

The fountain is a great idea, you get your personal glass and can try six beers in a nice atmosphere, particularly in a warm summer night. There is always a nice and friendly service person available, who assists in cause of problems and makes sure that empty beer barrels are timely replaced.
Unfortunately the good impression is reversed once you try to visit a restaurant after taking business partners or friends to the beer fountain. Concrete: September 13th, visit with two business partners from Switzerland. Tried to get some food a "Experiment" (open according to internet until 10.00 pm) at 07.30 pm - it was closed. September 23rd, visit with a business partner from Austria and two friends from Slovenia. Tried to get a steak at "Salsa" (open according to internet until 9.00 pm) at 07.50 pm - the waitress was, without apology, telling us that the kitchen will only do pizza and nothing else (Salsa is a steak house and advertised as such). This is ridiculous, especially as the waitress behaved very arrogant. I became angry which immediately triggered an offensive comment from another restaurant guest.
So: Sorry, Zalec, if you are not able to convice your gastronomic partners to be friendly and reliable, forget it. We will not come back and we will not recommend you to any of our business partners and friends. We want to enjoy and not to be treated like a piece of garbage.
It is a pitty that the gastronomy ruins a good idea like this fountain. But in tourism and business the whole experience counts and not only the single positive thing among awful treatment. Therefore only two stars.

I regularly drive on the highway between Hungary and Italy, so I decided to stop here for a break since it's just few minutes from the highway.
Well, let me say immediately that is nice and funny. The square is pretty, in order, clean, a lot of trees and shadow, with comfortable chairs. The beer is more expensive than in the Oktoberfest in Munich :) but you pay also the glass obviously, which is a nice souvenir itself. Of the 6 beers 3 were really nice, 2 just ok and one I couldn't finish. I suggest to offer some good or at least decent food in the surroundings...the only options are hard pretzels in the store where they sell the glasses (still the best option) or an incredibly disgusting looking kebab next to it (of course I didn't try it, it looked really terrible, the worst kebab ever, really those ones made with minced meat or who knows what, looking like a huge wurst, how people can eat that stuff?). I suggest also to find a way to re-use the glass and not having to buy a new glass each time, they should find a way to re-charge the chip under the glass, so just to pay the beer cost the second time if someone carries the old glass. Or selling just the chip, since it's just a stitch attached under the glass.

Made the hour-drive from Ljubljana to this beer pilgrimage but when we arrived, we discovered it closed for the winter 11 days earlier!!! Yes, make sure you know when the beer fountain is open and closed! It's a great concept to celebrate the hops production in the region. While here, I did get an opportunity to drink several Slovenian beers. The nation is undergoing a craft beer craze similar to the United States about a dozen years ago.
It's not really free beer. Buy the special mug and fill up!
If you're driving to and from Ljubljana, make sure you stop in Trojane for their version of a crispy kreme doughnut!!!

I live in Žalec, a small town in Slovenia. Before the Fountain was built Žalec was very boring place. Now, we have a right place to talk, discuse, to have fun. It is the miracle of our small town.

My friends and I visited Green Gold fountain in May 2018. I loved the experience! For 8 euros you buy a beer mug with chip at the bottom. The glass mug was designed by famous Slovenian designer Oskar Kogoj especially for this fountain. It’s beautiful in its own and you get to keep it. You use this mug to get beer from the fountain. The fountain has 6 beer taps with different beers. You place the mug under the tap, the system reads the chip and the tap delivers 1 dcl of beer. There is also a very innovative mug washing tap. Around the fountain are panels with information regarding the history of beer making in Slovenia and the description of available beers. You can’t exactly get drunk on this beer, but that’s not the point. You are meant to taste different beers all made from hop grown in region Styria. When planning a trip here be aware that it is only operational from April till October. Also it is not suitable for children. At all times an employee is present to make sure no underage drinking is going on. He will also gladly tell you all about the Green Gold fountain.
