Beautiful temple with an incredible history. Definitely worth a visit as it was the first place of worship when Koyasan was created.

The whole temple area is quite impressive, with lots of templs, halls.. and everything within the nature. If you're lucky, it won't be too crowded. In if you're even luckier, you'll have a nice day. It's quite impressive. You have to pay to get in the main temple, but the rest are free.

This is the spot where Kobo Daishi found the vajra he had hurled to determine where to build a monastery, 1200 years ago. Around twenty beautiful temples and pagodas, including the bright vermillion "great pagoda," Konpon Daito, rebuilt in the 1930s and kept freshly painted. Early in the morning, there are monks chanting in the Kondo (the main pavilion) and the 'no entry' apparently only applies to tour groups, a monk nodded me in without any objection.

Koyasan Danjo Garan is a sacred area with many temples and supporting buildings where Kobo Daishi Kukai started to establish Koyasan as a religious center. Most temples were constructed from 819 on.

A must-see site in Koyasan. The brightly coloured pagoda is stunning. The Meido (Portrait Hall) is said to be the residence of Kobo Daishi, founder of Koyasan and the Shingon School. When I was there in the 4th week of April, I had the good fortune of seeing an annual ritual to pay homage to Kobo Daishi.

This brilliant red pagoda sticks out very clearly throughout Koyasa and after the complex at Okunoin, was the highlight of our trip to Koyasan.

We arrived here by the women's pilmigrimage trail, which is a fascinating path, and makes arriving at the temple site more interesting.

While the outside makes for absolutely beautiful photos, it is really worth taking the time to look inside too, as it is even more enriching than the outside. We were blown away but the statues and the mandala, and very pleased to have spent the 200 yen on the entry.
