This tomb around Asuka is on my list because it is on the Tentative List of Unesco's World Heritage Site that I wish to be inscribed.
I expected to be 'just a tomb hill' anyway. But I didnt expect it would be quite a long walk from Asuka train station. For me, it's ok.. coming from a WHS junkie. But for the rest of the group, it's not worth the effort :-(
It was a hot day ... and the remedy was visiting the mural museum for the AirCon.

A famous historic tomb situated in a nice park with interesting trails and clean restrooms. There are 2 museums here as well as the Nakaoyama tumulus. A volunteer said he spoke no English but kinda indicated they've dug up the stones and removed things to museum(s).

Kitora experience is free & much more informative. So skip this unless you are really into tumuli. The paintings are beautiful but there is only a small pamphlet in English

Takamatsuzuka Tomb is famous for its mural paintings. But unfortunately, we cannot visit inside. So, what we can see at this site is just a small hill in a park. However it incites us to imagine about the life in the ancient time.

The burial mound rose up right above us from where we parked our bicycles.
We were disappointed to see that is really a very tiny thing. We had expected something larger, at least the size of the keyhole tombs we had seen on other bicycling adventures in Japan. This is a modest kofun. We climbed up to the top of it on the path and walked around, photographing it. From the top there is a pleasant view to the valley below.
We began to realize that chasing sites here was going to be another exercise in pursuing the small and precious and perhaps not so very important things in and of themselves - though certainly historically the totally of the place is very important.
For us, it became the search experience and the bicycling that counted most.

Takamatsuzuka Tomb is something I've always wanted to visit.
The tomb itself was just like that, but the restored murals were very exciting. I could really feel the ancient culture.
It seems there used to be a pine tree on top of the mound, which is apparently where the name Takamatsuzuka came from.

If it is considered an ancient tomb, it is a small circular tomb from the final period of the period. (However, during the final period, edicts were issued to limit funerals to a minimum, and it is much smaller than the tombs of Emperor Tenmu and Jito, the most powerful couple in Japanese history who boasted great power, and the heyday of keyhole-shaped tombs.) But that mural was discovered there. After excavation, it was backfilled and maintained, but it is now as small as an artificial hill in an elementary school playground. It is on a slope, so be careful not to mistake it for the entire mountain when you look up. You can see a replica of the mural itself at the nearby mural museum. Personally, I thought it would be close to life-size, but it was actually a very small painting. I was a bit surprised.
