Trail is in excellent condition and there is a local shop a third of the way up on the left. Has local woodworking and some other Japanese cloth material. The beginning point has a coffee shop that was a beautiful building inside and out. Highly recommend getting your coffee at the shop at the base of the trail. They speak some English but very cute and super friendly staff.

Family hike to Hossawa-no-Taki Waterfalls. This is the only waterfall in Tokyo to have been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. The majestic waterfall is located near the headwaters of Akigawa-River and has a total height of 62 meters (203 feet) in four steps. Only the bottommost step, with a height of 23.3 meters (76 feet) can be viewed from the hiking trail. The deep pool at the base of the last step of the falls is shrouded in mystery. According to an ancient legend the deep pool at the base of the falls is home to a giant snake.

Met up with a friend in Musashi Itsukaichi, which is little over an hours journey on the Chuo line from Shinjuku. A 20 minute bus ride (be aware that frequency is really scarce) took us to Hosawa-no-taki bus stop & a short 10-15 min hike brought us to the waterfall. The short exhilarating hike was enough to absorb the beautiful Autumn foliage and breathe in the fresh, clear, crisp mountain air that we city dwellers die for.
Enjoyed seeing how people were basically overdressed i.e dressed to the hilt in hiking / trekking gear. Honestly, a pair of good walking shoes is all you need with some warm clothes if you are heading there during the fall. In winter you better suit yourself up because the waterfall is frozen & it is lit up in different hues. Anyway, you do get to see a fashion parade at times with a few young girls dressed in their Sunday best with high heels, short skirts, etc. all this mixed with the cacophony of amazement from many hikers who view the falls & loud overseas tourists & clicks from a lot of camera shutters, is an interesting amalgamation of sight & sound. Definitely a worthwhile trip !
Did notice a lot of bicycle enthusiasts riding along the way. So if you are in shape this would make a good place to ride your bike.

It is a beautiful waterfall that you can visit by public transport from Tokyo.
From the nearest bus stop about 20 minutes walk, you can go to the waterfall basin.
Sidewalk has been well maintained. You can see that it is tourist destination, which is loved by local people.
This can not be playing in the water because it is a local water source.

Beautiful hike through the forrest, not too difficult from the parking area, even smaller children can do this (but no strollers), early on on the trail is a small cafe / bistro with refreshments. The falls itself are not very big, but very beautiful. After a hot walk it is possible to soak your feet and feel refreshed.
