The village is very quiet during summertime. No tourist and many restaurants and stores closed during summer. The village itself is quite pretty with traditional house and several public tradiitonal onsen. The only stores open are souvenir stores selling local items, snacks, and food. The...More

There are 13 baths--one is not free, and the other is reserved for "cooking"--and it is surely hot. But, the water quality is excellent--your blisters and cuts and burns and bruises will heal faster than you licking and dabbing it with god knows what. There...More

Very quaint town with "free" onsens throughout town. Bring own towel and enjoy. If onsen water is too hot, just turn on the cold water (turn off when done, obvious but you'd be surprised). When leaving, drop a tip in the box in between the...More

Stunning little town, and fantastic winter sports. The food and atmosphere is fantastic. Be ready for Bogans though if you go in winter.

My friends visited the baths last few years. Both have tattoos and I haven’t heard they had to cover them. They went to the tourist baths where you can wear swimmers, but also the public ones, where you go in without.
