Before going to the town of Hiraizumi, we had no knowledge about this Motsu-ji Temple. When we visited the Chuson-ji Temple to see the Konjiki-do Hall, we were suggested to also visit this temple and that’s how we learned about it. It was something like...More

A few minutes walk from Hiraizumi Station, this old temple (850 AD) and its adjacent gardens are a worthwhile place to visit. Beautiful architecture and woodwork and a lovely lake and small spring based river system.

Nice to walk around taking in the scenery and the beautiful nature walk. But mostly ruins. Not as impressive in stature and condition as the main temple complex chusonji. But pleasant to walk around and relax.

First the only thing original is the garden, all the other buildings are later reconstructions. I strongly recommend going into the treasure house / museum first to see a very good scetch of what this huge temple compound looked like in the 1100's when Hiraizumi...More
