This is one of the few place in Japan which provide late cherry blossom. This place doesnt seem to be popular among travel agents. Hence, not many people come here, which makes this park even more desirable to be visited. It was quite, and you can take a lot of photos without being disturbed by other tourists.

The area is known to have over a hundred different species of Sakuras. So even in mid-May, I was able to see them. Also, Sakura ice-cream is sold near the castle entrance - worth trying.

Visited the park on 2 May 2017. The cherry blossom trees were so demure yet majestic. The beauty of mother nature is on display. Many varieties of sakura and they are all in full regalia. This park is huge and will take a few hours if you intend to take slow walk around the entire place. Families having picnics with smiling faces. Ice cream was great too! It is one of the places in the world where you can let time goes by.

If you're planning to go there during the cherry blossom season from hakodate, it is advised to rent a car (2 hour drive). The drive was worth it to see all the beautiful cherry blossoms walk around the park to see the trees, the best ones are further inside.

There are many varieties of cherry blossom trees in the Park. We were initially worried that all the cherry trees have disappeared due to the intense rain & wind. However, we decided to try our luck and brave the 3hrs journey from Hakodate station (via train & bus combo). There were many avid photographers and few tourists! We basically had the chance to photograph for as long as we like!

Matsumae Park contains the castle and clan temples of the Matsumae samurai clan that once administered this northernmost part of the Japanese civilisation, until complete subjugation of Hokkaido in the 19th century. Undoubtably, the best part of the Park are the temples, which, although not very old when compared to the more famous temples of Kyoto and Nara, have some of the most detailed and gorgeous carvings I've seen in my travels throughout Japan. The clan cemetery is situated among towering pine trees, giving a very atmospheric feel, and well worth a wander between the moss-covered and lichen-wrapped tombstones (some of which look modern, which may mean that the descendants are still using the site today). And of course, visiting during cherry blossom season is an added bonus. Well worth a detour if travelling through Hokkaido.
