A large skiing area spread across 18 'resorts'. the snow was really good for the 3 days in early March of our visit...plenty of fresh powder and lovely piste conditions...we stayed at ichinose diamond resort, which is a good central base. Plenty of variety of slopes for beginners through to more experienced skiers. There were a few runs marked as extreme....but in comparison to North America they were quite easy. Lift lines were non existant during our stay and apart from the central beginners area, there was hardly anybody on the pistes

Okushiga has the steepest slopes including we think 7 back country gates as we found gate 7(!). Unfortunately, we could find no information about them anywhere....we skied 4 of them....3 finished in a central drain...the 4th we think would have gone to a road midway between 2 resorts....we tried to avoid the hike but had an adventure getting back to civilisation!

we went over to Yokoteyama on the last day.....so skiing over to the base of the Giant area was straightforward...but then we knew we needed a bus...finding this was a challenge as even when you find someone who can speak english it was hard to get across what we wanted to know. So at the base of the Giant area look for the revolving gondola (sets of 3 linked cabins) take this to the top, where there is a base centre and the bus goes from here....it goes in the wrong direction 1st towards sun valley...but turns around soon after and goes up to Yokoteyama

And the bonus of our trek was we came across a bunch of snow monkeys just hanging around on the piste next to the gondola mid station!

Highly recommended for both on & off-piste skiing, although many lifts are slow and none have footrests, so tired legs !

This is a rough-and-ready sort of place, with tremendous opportunities for exploration. Sometimes a bit of walking is required and the whole experience is adventurous.

We had an incredible time skiing in Shiga Kogen. The resort was really well run, there were a vast variety of slopes and the snow was incredible. Didn't get a chance to cover it all in the time we were there either so would definitely return!

This is a great ski area that caters for all ski abilities and pisted very well. Had our best ever hot chocolate at the kiosk at the top of the gondola.

I'd happily return here to ski if the lift system was modernised to European standards. This isn't the only resort with dated lift system. Annoyingly, there is no direct bus from either end of the ski area, which is a real pain, and the 2 buses don't link up time wise.

Our favourites were the black run off Ichinose Family (because everyone else on that lift are beginners riding the green run) and the Yakebitaiyama area.

Has a large number of small resorts joined together so you can cruise around a big variety of runs. Eating options are a bit limited, so try and get a hotel in a village. Ichinose is pretty good and central. Some tree runs. Runs are generally not overly long, plenty of steeps. Very nice in the powder.

Amazingly large skiing area with great, fluffy powder snow. Fantastic tree runs and great pistes too. Loads of lifts with friendly staff

We drove to Shiga Kogen for a day trip to ski with our relatives and friends. We were pleasantly surprised at how big the ski resort was. There were so many slopes to explore and one day actually was not enough. There are many hotels to choose from. We visited Gramd Phoenix Hotel, where our relatives were staying at, and skied to the Prince Hotel to have lunch. The overall skiing experience was fantastic. The slopes are well connected, and there was so much to explore for first time visitors like us.

Shiga Kogen got lots of kudos from The reviewer powder hounds. It’s connected mainly by ski lifts and shuttle buses. The ski areas are all pretty good. There right on back country skiing without a guide. Okushiga Kogen seems a bit more relaxed on this front. My only gripe is there seems to be only one international ATM st the post office to service this massive ski area.
