Beautiful building with informative displays on the Akan Mashu National Park in both Japanese and English. Staff were really helpful in suggesting local walks, experiences and osens. Trail guides available in English. Worth visiting.

Kawayu Eco museum center lies next to Akaezomatsu forest and some picnic sites. The museum is interesting if you want to learn about the nature in the area and know more about volcano's, more specific, Mount Iouzan, which lies next to the museum. There is a very nice nature trail from the Eco Museum to the volcano, Tsutsujigahara - Mt Iouzan Nature Trail (approx. 2,5 km long).

We popped in to pick up some useful leaflets and maps. It is a lovely modern building, like many such centres on Hokkaido, with interesting displays about the wildlife and a video about the area with English subtitles. Three short nature trails start from here but one was closed on our visit due to bears. This isn't somewhere you will stop for long, but do pop in.

Quite a bit of the information is in English and this is made very well to learn about the nature in the area- highly recommended to stop and read about where you are, the wildlife and plants of the area.

This place is calm and friendly. Entrance is free. There is a very instructive movie about the area (with English subtitles). many interesting drawing, diagrams (and even more for those reading Japanese). Staff has been awesome at helping us planning visits at both lakes. They can provide you with many interesting brochures.
