An astonishing sight appears before one when arriving at the top of the mountain. A pristine, perfectly preserved and serene lake, high up in the mountain's crater. Excellent photo opportunities and tasty ramen in the shop add to the entertainment. A must for anyone visiting...More

So much to explore this geologically and wildlife area. Throughly deserving of being a beautiful place to visit as is so much of Hokkaido. Easily accessible by road and weather permitting great views and landscapes to die for. The mists and clouds rolling in between...More

The views of the lake do depend on the weather, but even if its cloudy with a bit of sun, the color of the water will be stunning. The lake itself cannot be approached, only observatories but its all that you need. We went to...More

Worthwhile trip and we were lucky to do the walk. Not a hard one but allow at least 4 hours round trip. Views were great along the way and the birdsong was fantastic as were the number of butterflies en route.

This place is spectacular, though totally weather dependent. We were lucky that the weather was perfect with no cloudy and a still lake.

We went to 2 observation points for Lake Mashu. Observation point 1 is the main area, where there is a souvenir shop, eatery and restrooms. A token entry fee is levied for vehicular entry. Observation point 3 is just by the side of the road,...More

After a couple of cloudy days in Utoro, it was great to have the sun shining at Lake Mashu. Stopped at the observatory as we already paid for car fees at Mt Io. On a sunny day, views are stunning regardless of which observatory you...More

We visited East Hokkaido in May 2017. We drove from Utoro area to Rausu via Shiretoko pass which was open after avalanche. We visited Po river heritage nature park and enjoyed exploring the park by bicycles. (You can also walk but it is quite far.)...More

Hi: I was there is January so I assume it will be open unless there is a heavy snow cover. When we were there there was some snow but did not interfere with the visit.
